IPL 2012

Postby brod » Sat Jan 07, 2012 12:00 am

The fifth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), comprising nine teams and 76 matches, will begin and end in Chennai, with the opening match on April 4 and the final on May 27. The teams will play each other at home and away during a league phase consisting of 72 games at 12, possibly 13, venues, beginning with the defending champions Chennai Super Kings playing Champions League T20 winners Mumbai Indians

The tournament is scheduled to begin 12 days after the Asia Cup final and a week after the end of South Africa's tour of New Zealand. At present there are three international series that will clash with the 2012 IPL and could affect player availability for both the franchises and the countries. Sri Lanka are hosting England in April, while West Indies host Australia and then travel to England in May.

The next player auction for the IPL is scheduled for February 4.

Dinesh Karthik, the Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper, will move from Kings XI Punjab to the Mumbai Indians in the first notable transfer ahead of the IPL's fifth season. Karthik was bagged by the Mumbai Indians for an undisclosed sum. A BCCI insider said it was easily the highest sum paid to buy a player from another team in the history of the IPL. In exchange for Karthik, allrounder R Sathish will go to Kings XI.

Yuvraj Singh, the India batsman, could be ruled out of cricket for as many as six months due to the ongoing treatment of his non-malignant lung tumour. This means he will at least miss the Asia Cup and the IPL, where he captained the Pune Warriors last year.

Pune Warriors have bought Ashok Dinda, the India fast bowler, and James Hopes, the Australia allrounder, from Delhi Daredevils. Both players were signed for two years, late on Sunday. Hopes is the second foreigner to be contracted by Warriors in the transfer window, after they beat Mumbai Indians in the race to sign Marlon Samuels of West Indies last week.
