Will never play another Test match for Australia. I for one am disappointed, for him and for cricket. A hard hitting all-rounder who bowls 150+ excites us all, but with Siddle,Pattinson,Hilfenhaus,Harris,Cummins,Starc all ahead of him and with Johnson looking at 12 months out the game at 31 years of age, I don't think we will see him under a baggy green again.

Anyone think he is a chance?

I've just been watching some of last years Ashes on DVD and he just releases the pressure once an over with a wide half-tracker which Cook, Strauss, Trott etc - slap over point for a boundary, and then they usually got a half volley on leg stump to glance to the fine leg fence as well.
The new attack is able to build pressure, something Johnson can rarely do.

IMO Johnson is a goner - Domestic Cricket / Big Bash for him is about where he is at now.

But in 12 months, with Starc a year more developed and Johnson a year older, you'd hope Starc would be a better alternative.

Starc would have benifited along from some 4 day cricket. Shit so would have Marsh and Harris!

I think part of the demise was the workload, and burnout on mainly flat decks

I think Johnson will be back and will be a better bowler. He has a chance to work on things because of need to get back in and time without having to perform week in week out. What he always had in his favour was even at his worst he could get a right hander to play defensively at wider balls. A chance to regain fitness, work on his action and I'm tipping in a couple of years we'll be talking about him as our main bowler again.

Cant see it happening. But you only need to play half a SS season to be considered. If he takes 20 wickets and pumps out a few tones then he will no doubt be given the nod in quick time!
If Harris is struggling to force his way back, then what chance does Mitch. Unless he gets an inswinger going, then Johnson will fall behind Starc from now on.
Australia at the moment are looking for consistancy, Mitch doesnt do that as a bowler, and defiently not with the bat. Plus Pattison is more then capable with the bat, along with Siddle improving, no need for his lower order batting!

For Australia to be a force again the side needs NO MITCHELL JOHNSON. You can't have a bowler come on and release the pressure nearly every time he bowls. At one stage in the republic he was shuffling in like a medium pacer. No rhythm at all. Hasn't been injury free for a year? Hasn't bowled well for many years. A ridculously overrated cricketer.

I struggle to understand this mentality that the selectors seem to have. Why would you need a lefty? In a battle for the last spot, it should always be the best bowler getting the gig, not one with a certain angle of delivery. Thank christ they got rid of Starc before India. With his "short or full" mentality all the pressure being built by tight, fast effective right handed bowlers would have been lost.

England have the best attack in the world at the minute, and they consist of five or six right hand seamers that all read from the same page - keep the pressure on.

Damn it was nice seeing Oz do that in the first test v India, regardless of how the next result goes I'd love to see the same sort of endeavour. Throw Mitch Johnson into that mix and you get that pressure release valve for the batsmen again. I liked what Mitch gave to Oz cricket at times, but in the end hope he doesn't come back.
