Daryl Harper has announced his retirement from international umpiring after the Indians unleashed a barrage of criticsm following the first test against the West Indies which even the ICC deemed as 'unfair'

IMO the ICC should be coming down hard on the BCCI over this - perhaps strip the third test of test status (wouldn't be the first time the ICC's done this with India). To have one of the ICC's best umpires ran out of the game by a bunch of spoilt brats is disgraceful.

Disgraceful. India has no respect for the game.

The problem is, at this point in time, India is the game.

Exactly Booney, sadly what India says goes. Biggest mistake was the ICC moving headquarters

India is everything that the ICC stands for. It's an absolute joke. The DRS is exactly the same. India used it once in a trial system and didn't like it so voiced their concerns heavily enough and for long enough for the ICC to tailor it to their liking. Pathetic. When are the ICC and the BCCI merging? once this new rotational policy comes in?

I've had the honour of calling Harps a mate for many years and I'm proud that he has taken this stand. As for India, I've said enough about them over the past few years, I'm not going over it all again.

I'm guessing this thread doubles as the WINDIES V INDIA thread?

If so, is Darren Sammy the worst performing player to be a Test Captain?

I always find it interesting that the Indians are the first to kick up about poor umpiring (often playing the race card), yet it was the conduct of Indian umpires that saw the introduction of neutral umpires in the first place, and why an Indian umpire has't got anywhere near the elite panel since Venkat finished in 2001...

that is a fantastic call. But it's because they know the Indian Cricket Council will likely listen to them. Good from Harps to shove it up them to some extent.

When Australia, England, South Africa and the West Indies stand up for what cricket should be the money and propoganda of the subcontinent will fall on deaf ears while the prestige of playing the game and being the best will win. So long as India don't have a winning record in those countries their victories will be hollow.

No great organisation can afford to be branch stacked. The AFL, ICC and ALP will all be minions until they govern for the greater interest, not the interest of the greater constituent numbers.

Ishant Sharma gets 10 wickets for the first time in a man of the match performance, even though VVS scored two crucial fifties.

Daryl Harper will now be able to pursue one of his favourite pastimes
He now has the opportunity to watch his beloved Norwood Football more often

Perhaps one day he will introduce me to Adelaide Hawk !

Venkat retired in 2004 from all forms, but it was the his former 'compatriot' SK Bansal who was largely responsible for the need to form an elite panel and appoint neutral umpires, following his disgraceful performance in the infamous 2nd Test of the 2001 AUS vs IND series on the sub-continent - coincidentally the last Test he ever stood in. ;)

Taking nothing away from India in that match though, who Steve Waugh made follow on after a 1st innings deficit of 274 runs. History tells us that VVS & Dravid went on to compile one of the best partnerships (376) in Test history & India won by a convincing 171 runs, but the win was significantly blighted by some absolute howlers dished out by Bansal in Australia's 2nd innings. :?

Great series though. 8)

Had the privelege of meeting Darryl back in the mid-80's during a junior rep match at Adel #2. Lovely bloke. Well played mate. =D>

Keep reading the Advertiser everyday, and no mention of Harpergate as yet
Surely this is big enough news to warrant Daryls version of events
Do we have to wait for Daryl Harper to have a beer in Public with Taylor Walker to make the press ?

Hopefully Daryl has something to say about this matter
His reputation is at stake, and this whole Harpergate needs finality

It's NO wonder the Indians DONT want the DRS to be applied to in games theyr'e involved in.
Turn the telly on and the 2nd ball i watch is the Turbanator bowling to Sammy, pushes forward, ball clearly misses bat, flicks top of pad, into his ribs and pops up to short leg. All the Indians instantly celebrate as if it's a formality and the umpire (dont know his name - The one who replaced HARPER ) puts the finger up. Sammy reluctantly leaves the crease.
Total F*****G Joke !!!
These CHEATS drives a fine umpire out of the game and then intimidates the lesser quality replacement to give decisions in their favour and with no Decision Referral System in place, they get away with it.
