Andrew "Ronald" McDonald

Postby Media Park » Sat May 28, 2011 8:36 am

Playing county cricket for Leicstershire, he's just hit 140 odd at better than a run a ball, taken three-for, and backed up in the second dig with an unbeaten fifty.

I'm thinking back to the start of the season, prior to his injury, where he had three hundreds (and striking around a run a ball), and was taking wickets...

Surely we couldn't do a lot worse by putting him in the Steven Smith role?

Thoughts?

He has been tried before, i dont think he did to bad. Ithink they should stick with Smith for a while and see how he goes. I personally would pick Smith ahead of McDonald. Guess it all depends if you want a batting or a bowling all rounder.

Andrew McDonald
Tests 4
Runs 107
Batting average 21.40
Top score 68
Wickets 9
Bowling average 33.33
Best bowling 3/25

Steve Smith

Top score 77
Wickets 3
Bowling average 73.33
Best bowling 3/51

He isn't the answer IMO, he's another one of the list of in-between players, very capable at first class level, not quite up to the international level though.

He isn't the answer....because he's shit. It's been well documented and demonstrated whenever he has had the extreme fortune to don the Baggy Green on his ginger bonce. Never seen a guy more out of his depth than when I watched him bat and I reckon I could face his bowling and maybe scratch out a few runs.

He definitely deserves a chance. His batting has improved out of sight in the past two years and add to that he is a very under-rated bowler. Very economical.

Chuck him in the one day side then. You have to take wickets to win test matches. SPUD.

Prior to his injury last year he should have been in the Ashes squad, possibly the team. Although I am a fan of Smith, I think McDonald is a better batsmen and bowler at the moment. Plenty of people judge McDonald on what they have seen of him at Test level and although he did look a class below the rest, the majority do when finding their feet at test level. We havent been succesful with any part time spin combinations (Smith, North, Clarke) so its time we bring in a full time spinner (easier to say than find I know) and have McDonald provide 15 overs of pressure an innings.

Batting Line Up Watto, Kat, Pup, Punter, Huss, McDonald, Haddin, Johnson (dont want to put him in), Siddle, Spinner (Hauritz, Lyon, Beer etc), Hilf
Bowling Line Up Hilf, Siddle, Watto, Johnson, Spinner, McDonald, Pup

Can't bat. Can't bowl. He has red hair. OUT YOU GO. No more spuds in the Aussie team thanks. Smiffy will be twice the player McDonald ever was. Just hope he doesn't do a Tommy Hawkins impersonation...they sort of look alike EEK!

Red hair really is the bottom line. Shaun Pollock was an outlier.

I knew the comparisons with Smith would be the big one...

My thinking is that Smith is 21, and probably has 15 years of top level cricket in him, but he doesn't really make it in the best side for me just yet.

Ronnie is a decent enough player for the time being. Not a ten year player, not a Watson player, but better RIGHT NOW than Smith...

Exactly. He deserves a chance. Can't believe he wasn't chosen in the Ashes squad late last year, just before his injury. He hit two hundreds in the same game against NSW, who had a full-strength bowling line-up.

His batting was the main factor to why people didn't rate him. That has since improved out of sight.
When he played for Australia he went for an average of 2-2.5 runs per over, which is real tight and builds pressure.
Plus, he came into the side when we were struggling and on a poor run of form. While he played, Australia won 3 of 4 games including a series win IN South Africa.

Definitely better than Smith right now.

And how does that make McDonald a better player? :? Jeez, produce some cricketers before trotting out this tired old chestnut. Even if McDonald was a Bluebagger I wouldn't want him in there because he is SHITE.

Yeah me too. [-o< I've never been able to work out how he got one in the first place, he's Sh!t! When the selectors picked him were they thinking- "Ok yeah we'll just give a baggy green to this guy coz even though he's not very good he's an allrounder and we have to have one of them in the 11"

Which is what they originally did with Watto- couldn't score runs or take wickets, now he's our best player.

Which is what they're doing with Smith now, can't bat, can't bowl, but unlike Scotty Muller, at least he can field...

When they first noticed Watson he was bowling very quickly for Tassie. He could also bat as well. Even the biggest supporters of Ronnie wouldn't say he's a quick. While we are bringing back Ronnie maybe we could bring back Beau Casson as well.

With our revolving door spin policy REB, it wouldn't shock me... Though Nathan Lyon needs to have a go as the token Redback soon.
