AU V WI 1960-2010 Super Test

AUSTRALIA + WEST INDIES
The Australian and West Indies cricket teams have been 2 of the most exciting teams since 1960
Both teams have at times, in this period, fielded arguably the best cricket teams of all time

SUPERTEST 1960-2011
I am going to compose a one off Super Test between AU + WI selecting the best players between 1960-2010
The Test will be played on a neutral oval
I have selected the Lords Oval in England

SELECTIONS
Everybody on SAFOOTY can contribute towards the 11 players picked for both teams
An open discussion on who will be selected will be divided into 6 catergories being :
AU BATSMEN
AU BOWLERS
AU KEEPERS
WI BATSMEN
WI BOWLERS
WI KEEPERS

CONDITIONS OF SELECTIONS
Must have played between 1960-2010
Included are players who still played at least 1 test in this period, despite playing mostly in the 1950s
The players will be selected on thier overall career performances
For example Frank Worrell[1948-1963] and Ray Lindwall[1948-1960] are available for selection

PITCH
Will be played at Lords, where else I ask
The pitch will be prepared to exact specifications
DAY 1 Assistance to the fast bowlers, particularly the first session
DAY 2 Good batting conditions
DAY 3 Good batting conditions
DAY 4 Pitch deteriorating , batters and bowlers having equal opportunity, pitch now turning for the spinners
DAY 5 Assistance to bowlers , in particular spin bowlers

DISCUSSIONS
As we go along we can discuss the abilities of some of the great players to have represented both countries

Also can you place your batting order for the top 6
This must include 2 opening batsmen, and 4 other batters

I will do the other batting/bowling/keepers catergories as we go along

Ok i only remember watching cricket live from 1989 onwards but have watched alot of old footage of games. Im Australian born but both my parents and grand parents etc etc were born and are from Jamaica so i have a keen interest on both these countries. Just thought i would post this so when i leave out a player who played during the 70's you will know where im coming from.

For me i would love to see the opening pairs being Langer & Hayden vs Greenidge & Haynes. To me opening batsmen should be measured in their partnership ability and these 2 partnerships were the greatest i have seen in my time.

There are also the must haves that cant be left out surely like.......

AUS
-S.Warne
-G.McGrath
-A.Gilchrist

WI
-B.Lara
-V.Richards
-J.Garner

My WI team would be

1. G.Greenidge
2. D.Haynes
3. V.Richards
4. B.Lara
5. G.Sobers
6. R.Kanhai
7. J.Dujon
8. J.Garner
9. M.Marshall
10. C.Ambrose
11. A.Roberts

12. C.Walsh

Sobers

12th Garner
Clive Lloyd would be a sentimental favourite though.

Keeping things on track

My 6 Australian batsmen would be

Hayden
Langer
G Chappell
Border (more highly rated since it is against the West Indies who he performed well against when they were at their peak)
S Waugh (unless we bat 4th ;) )
Ponting

That side looks about right, although i'd probably cheat a little and have Roger Harper as 12th man.

Hall and Roberts may compete for Walsh's spot.

FWIW, I think the Windies would win (probably convincingly).

THE UNSEENABLES
Of this list I didnt see Neil Harvey bat, trying to line up his talents against say someone like Steven Waugh is difficult
Norman Oneil is another Ive only heard about
Bob Cowper is another, he retired from cricket at an earlyish age I reckon ?
Ive heard how good he was and what he could have been
I have seen him at SS level a couple of times when VI played SA and looked a class player

AUSTRALIAN BATSMEN

HARVEY
ONEIL

AUSTRALIAN BOWLERS

BENAUD
DAVIDSON
LINDWALL

AUSTRALIAN KEEPERS

GROUT

WEST INDIES BATSMEN

WORRELL

Ive read a fair bit about these guys
When judging how good past players were, its inaccurate to guess, so I can say just how good they are
Its gotta be guess work
The Frank Worrell trophy is named after this great WI player

IF anyone has any info on these players feel free to post

Sorry mate, I wasn't a Taylor fan, probably because I felt that he should've retired sooner than he did, his tons were too far apart IMO towards the end of his career, his 334* bought him a fair few more games.
I'd prefer Langer, Boon or G.Marsh for the sheer grit they brought to the team, each to their own though, a very impressive line-up nevertheless.
Richardson over Sobers was an interesting one, I was toying up who I could push out for Richie, there's no right or wrong answers, both have been great ambassadors for the West Indies.

8. S.Warne
9. D.Lillee
10. J.Thompson
11. G.McGrath

You'd do anything to see this match. Two of the greatest opening partnerships of all time. Australian spin against a barrage of high quality pacemen from the Windies. I wouldn't be confident putting money on either side. The only strength I see is Australia's spinners, so would tend to favour Australia to win this Supertest.

My teams:

West Indies
Greenidge
Haynes
Lara
Richards
Lloyd
Sobers
Dujon
Garner
Marshall
Holding
Ambrose
12th Kanhai

Australia
Hayden
Langer
Ponting
G Chappell
S Waugh
Border
Gilchrist
Davidson
Warne
Lillee
McGrath
12th Benaud

edit: I forgot Border - he is a must. Langer was the player not up to the standard of the others in my team, but who of those could I put in to open? I'm not sure any of them ever opened in a Test match. Toss up between Benaud and Davidson of who to leave out. Probably at Lords I'd have to leave out Benaud and go with 3 pacemen.
