Tait's South Australian counterpart Callum Ferguson could also be line for a recall after being added to the squad for the final two one-dayers as cover for Shaun Marsh.
While Marsh has remained with the team and underwent the scans on Tuesday morning, the selectors have deemed it prudent to call up Ferguson, who had been preparing to play for South Australia in the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash final, in the left-hander's place.
"Callum has an excellent record in one-day internationals for Australia and is in good form this season," said chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch.
"We are sure Callum will seize the opportunity that comes following the unfortunate hamstring injury suffered by Shaun Marsh."
Paceman Tait has been bowling three-over spells in the nets as he recovers from a strained buttock muscle which he sustained during the second game in Hobart. That's a fitness test ?
Fellow quick Brett Lee may be in line for a rest having bowled exceptionally well for Australia in the first five matches.
Australia captain Ricky Ponting is also on the comeback trail and is expected to bat within the next 24 hours for the first time since the Boxing Day Test.
Batsman Cameron White said it had been great to have Ponting around the dressing rooms as a source of advice and experience even though he has not been playing.
"It's great to have a person like Ricky around for anything," White said.
"He's obviously doing all he can to get his fitness right in time for the World Cup."
White said the final two matches of the series remained important stepping stones to the World Cup on the subcontinent even though the Australians have secured the series 4-1.
