We are pathetic

One thing this summer has shown me is we are the most pathetic nation when it comes to supporting our team. As soon as things start going wrong we spit the dummy, turning against everyone, and act like a bunch of spoilt brats. Everyone was on the bandwagon when we were winning, but as soon as things start going downhill everyone jumps off and shows what type of people they really are. The knives come out and everyone suddenly becomes an expert on all areas of the game from player development to selection to batting order. It doesn't matter if you like some of the players or not, it doesn't matter if the player you wanted in the team was chosen or not, what does matter is that they are our national team. Don't pretend to be a supporter when we are winning if you don't want to support our team when they aren't. All we have shown this summer is how pathetic we are as supporters.

I hope the next time our national team starts winning a lot of people on this forum don't come back and pretend to be supporters.

The Australian cricketers are not playing country footy where everyone pats you on the back win loose or draw. They're paid massive money and when they don't look to be fully committed to the cause and keep putting up well-below-par performances, you can't expect everyone to keep positive. I agree we should always support our team win loose or draw but surely at that level you are open to criticism. Its how you respond to that criticism that earns respect. To loose 3 tests by over an innings is not acceptable.

Supporters and the press in England are exactly the same, if not worse when their team is not playing well. I don't think its just Australians.

Disagree there PAFC. I think there is a lot of hilditch haters out there, not hate for australia. I for one would be quite happy to see australia struggle for a few years with a youthful side that is going to build foundation for the next 10 years. The fact we are persisting with players based on reputation, picking players on "form" when they are quite clearly travelling sh*thouse and ruining players confidence levels trying to find the right mix is what is frustrating. And to top it all off, hilditch doesnt feel at all responsible when we get pumped 3-1 by the old enemy.....please

I hate hilditch, not australia.

There is certainly merit in what you are stating pafc but also just blindly accepting woeful performances isn't right either.

There is always a balance to such things.

Also, some posters, including myself, are just taking the mickey (expept anything to do with Tait) so try not to take us too seriously.

Cheers ...

Not sure I'll hate supporting Australia but I'd like more accountability from the highly paid players, selectors and coaches.

If Nielsen was coaching any other sport I'd say he'd be sacked or forced to resign.
Most if not all team sports will not tolerate out of form players for 18 months before they are dropped.
Hilditch...less said the better.

As an Australian that supports another cricket team and has done so as long as I can remember, I completely agree. you need to stick with your team you start off supporting for whatever reasons and stick by them. Just becuse australia is going through a poor patch at the moment is no reason for their fans to jump off.

Wow....an Australian who supports another cricket team and not our own giving advice on loyalty to a team.

Please, please don't tell me you're an English supporter...

It matters the most to me, I wont support a team I don't barrack for, if I like another team more, I will support them. Once we begin selecting players on merit not reputation or because they are good blokes or whatever the reason may be, I will throw my support back their way, I am sick of ill-logical decision-making. It's not about whether we are winning or losing for me, I was hoping for a loss here and there when I thought we were playing with too much arrogance a few years back.

Doesn't national pride ( unlike football team allegiances ) over ride the fact you dont agree with the selections made? How can you like another country's team more than your own? Sure, you might appreciate their talents, but like them more?

If, for instance, you are a Adelaide fan and they pick Tambling in round 1 and you think he is a muppet, do you not support them that week?

PS - I do occasionally get "Boney"....but it's Booney.

Damn straight it does. I can appreciate the opposition more in Cricket than I can in footy, which is why I'll never understand bozos turning up to Cricket training in the Saffies one day strip.
