Wanted: A nation to follow for the World Cup.

Postby Lightning McQueen » Tue Jan 18, 2011 12:20 pm

After seeing the squad selected for the upcoming World Cup I am devastated with the logic of selection.
Call me un-Australian if you like but I will find it hard to support players that I don't like, don't think deserve to be our national team or that I have no respect for.
I have always been a strong supporter of Australian cricket but feel extremely let down in recent times, I have also been an avid supporter of those players from other nations that have made this game so great in it's various formats, players such as Kapil Dev, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Viv Richards, Curtley Ambrose, Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya and many others.
It will now be a matter of scanning the squads and seeing which group of players that I would like to see win the World Cup.

Shame on CA in my opinion, I have lost my love for the national side.

You're not the only one mate.

I'll be checking out the Windies line up.

Exactly Q, my gripe is why did they name a preliminary squad, what hope did some of them have of proving their worth. why did we play two T20's instead of ODI's when selection was so fine.
Here are some examples:
Ferg: Got flown over to India to not play, comes and does well in the domestic comp and fails to get a chance to impress on the international scene.
Warner: Was he ever under consideration, plays two T20's, does OK but no opportunity in the longer format.
Hodge: What opportunity was he given?
Smith: Given opportunities and still fails to impress on the big stage.
Doherty: Limited opportunties and has been ok.
Finch: Did well in the T20.
Christian: What more could he have done.
S.Marsh: Starved of opportunity, I thought he was one of the golden boys too.
Siddle: Did well at running drinks out.

D.Hussey: Even though I'd probably have him in my squad I don't think he's been going too crash hot.
Tait: Hasn't set the world on fire, would've been good to see after a couple of ODI's his progress.
Johnson: See Tait, I'm not sold that he has the control to be a good ODI bowler.
Bollinger: See Tait, gets clubbed by decent batsmen.
Lee: See Tait, I hope they have wheelchair access, definetely past it.

The list goes on, I don't see a need for so many bowlers that bowl the same sort of ball.

Media Park's nations to follow:

A/ Bangladesh... Love seeing these guys win games, even if it's against the minnows... And the Windies...
One to watch: Shakib al Hasan

B/ The Netherlands... Patriotic am I, and the only current South Aussie in the Cup.
One to watch: Tom Cooper, and his sixty-plus ODI average plummet.

C/ Anyone playing Australia... Just because we've shot ourselves in the foot with rubbish selections...
Ones to watch: Tait and Lee to break down, Ponting and Clarke to not make a fifty between them.

In all seriousness, it should be RSA v IND in the final...

You miss my point, why should I barrack for a team I don't respect or like, I was a Woodville supporter through the 80's mate. The going doesn't need to be tough, just pick the best 11.

Are you the "supporters nazi"? We won Sunday night didn't we? I hope someone else wins the World Cup because I don't think we deserve to.

I support the Australian Cricket Team, like most posters on this site, and it will hurt to see them lose...

But I (and the others) am not going to get our hopes up and wax lyrical about the hopes of this side, because it just will not be successful.

When the selectors start picking the best side and we still get pantsed, then we will accept it, but we will not accept the selectors failing to pick the best side.

I've named a couple of other things that I will be looking for, because I do not believe that the selected side will have any success.

I was more likely to quietly support the opposition at times when we were winning everything.

Now, even though I disagree with some selections, I'll be supporting us 100%.
