Michael Clarke (c), Cameron White (vc), Doug Bollinger, Xavier Doherty, Brad Haddin, Nathan Hauritz, David Hussey, Mike Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Peter Siddle, Steve Smith, Shaun Tait, Shane Watson.

Note: The squad for the remainder of the ODI’s against England and the final squad of 15 for the World Cup will be announced next week at a time to be advised by Cricket Australia.

Chairman of the National Selection Panel, Andrew Hilditch, said:

"We've selected a very strong squad of 14 for the first ODI of what promises to be a really fiercely contested series between these two sides.

"The squad is selected for one game only in order for the National Selection Panel to look at certain players before we select the ICC Cricket World Cup squad of fifteen on January 19.

"Our One-day form has been pretty good over the last 12 months and as we build to a fourth successive tilt at the World Cup, these matches against England will not only provide us with a stern challenge but allow players to make cases for inclusion in that World Cup squad.

"We've given David Hussey the opportunity to push for inclusion in the World Cup squad as we think he will be well suited for the sub-continent conditions which will be faced in the World Cup.

"Ricky Ponting is recovering from a finger injury sustained during the Ashes, which gives Michael Clarke another chance to lead the One-day side.

"His vice-captain will be Cameron White, who has had a real impact on this form of the game in the last year and Cameron will be coming off leading Australia in the two Twenty20 internationals this week.

"We have some explosive fast bowling with Shaun Tait, Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Doug Bollinger and Peter Siddle all selected in this squad.

"Shaun and Brett will therefore have an opportunity to impress in this form of the game before World Cup squad selection.

"We've included Nathan Hauritz, who has been a key part of our One-day side for some time now and Xavier Doherty in this squad, who played well against Sri Lanka at the start of the summer.

"This gives us a chance to look at both of them prior to the World Cup

they will probably pick the world cup squad after this match early next week. so good games from Lee or Tait will almost certaintly get them on the plane.
but i thought Dan Christian would have got a chance to prove his worth at that level.
and Ferguson, Voges, Cowan should all be picked before Dave hussey on this seasons efforts

Dan Christian definatly should have been in this side.

Hopefully it means they think his a certainty for the world cup squad and dont need to trial him when other border line players need to prove them selves. ;)

What is Steve Smith in the side for? No, don't tell me, his infectious enthusiasm.

These selectors go from bad to worse. Where the hell is Ferguson and Christian? Hilditch's response when questioned why Christian isn't in the side - 'because Shane Watson and Steve Smith are better all-rounders than him'. Watson yes, Smith no.

So i guess this side in batting order will be:

Watson- ok form
Haddin- has lost form from early in summer
Clarke- terribly out of form
D.Hussey- out of form
C.White- not sure but dont think he has been setting the domestic comp alight
M.Hussey- In ok touch
S.Smith- Is a no 8
Bowlers

So from that where the hell are we going to get 250 plus scores from??

Marsh
Paine
Watson
Ferguson
White (c)
M.Hussey
Christian

All of these have better form than their counterparts in the same position.

I hope this resembles the team for the rest of the series and world cup. You would think ferg is a certainty considering they picked him coming back from the knee with no 1st class form in india

I don't think he helped himself with his bowling in the PM's 11 the other night. Granted he is a far better bowler than what he bowled the other day.
I just hope the CA selectors pull their heads out their AR53S ASAP!

Selectors going on reputation again instead of in-form cricketers. The sooner we see the back of Hilditch, the better.

Coming from an era where SA players were always overlooked you'd think he'd be batting for the SA boys, obviuosly not

Steve Smith, specialist fielder, and specialist injection of youth so the selectors can go back and defend themselves with him...
