Lehmann named Bulls T20 coach
14 December, 2010
Sportal

Ex-Australian batsman and IPL coach Darren Lehmann will coach Queensland in this summer's KFC Twenty20 Big Bash.

Lehmann, who took the Deccan Chargers to the IPL T20 championship in 2009, will start coaching duties with the Bulls on 21 December to prepare for their opening game on 2 January against Victoria at the MCG.

The former South Australian star took over the Chargers after they finished last in 2008 and was an immediate success as they claimed the lucrative 2009 title.

The Bulls also announced Queensland Academy of Sport coach Justin Sternes would take over as head coach for the rest of the season in the Sheffield Shield and Ryobi Cup competitions after Trevor Barsby resigned last week.

Sternes, 33, has been an assistant to former Bulls coaches John Buchanan, Bennett King and Terry Oliver and has been QAS head coach since 2008. He also worked with the Australian team in Dubai in 2009 and coached Australia A on their tour of India in the same year.

Queensland chief executive Graham Dixon said Lehmann would provide the Bulls with an experienced T20 hand coming into the tournament.

"Darren's earned a reputation as an innovative coach in the IPL and with his extensive international playing and coaching experience, we are confident he will further assist the development of our promising young squad," he said.

Meanwhile Queensland's Big Bash overseas recruit Michael Lumb will arrive in Brisbane this weekend.

The left-handed top order batsman will play some T20 matches cricket next week for the Queensland Academy of Sport in the Futures League T20 tournament in Melbourne prior to Christmas.

Lumb is expected to be available for the entire Big Bash series after he was overlooked for the English ODI and T20 squads announced this week.

The South African-born batsman was a member of the England team that won the T20 World Cup earlier this year.

Grat idea by the Bulls hiring a speciallist T20 coach. IMO all teams should do this especially Australia. Its a different skill set and it also is handy having a coach with no allegience to the test or one day teams

I've just heard that SACA have been so impressed by Michael Beer's rapid rise that they are going to appoint him state coach.

Delivered by Jamie Cox at Adelaide Oval
14th December 2010

Thank you for coming.

I am here today to formally advise that at a meeting last night the SACA Board determined that it will not be renewing state coach, Mark Sorell’s contract beyond its current term, which expires at the end of the season.

Out of respect to Mark I have advised him of this decision this morning and he has consequently stepped down as coach of the Redbacks, effective immediately.

Mark’s current contract will be honoured and he has elected to take this time to pursue other opportunities.

Coaching is a tough job and we felt that ensuring Mark had as much notification as possible that he was not going to be re-contracted would give him the best chance of pursuing other options before the end of the season.

The squad has been advised this afternoon and Assistant Coach, Jeff Vaughan will prepare the Redbacks for tomorrow’s Ryobi One Day Cup game against the Bushrangers at Adelaide Oval and for the Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield match against Victoria starting on Friday.

I would like to make it very clear that this outcome was initiated by management and the Board and not by the playing group.

The players have however, been consulted and understand the reasons for the decision.

I wish to place on the record mine and the Board’s appreciation of the effort Mark has put into coaching the Redbacks for the past 3 ½ seasons and the professional way in which he has handled this situation.

Didnt have the skills or the credentials more like it, all he had was contacts in the boys club (SACA)

Our players have the ability no doubt, but need to be guided by someone who has done something in the game, achieved success and someone they respect

Hopefully we appoint someone from outside the state eg Berry who comes from a winning culture and can instill some of that into our players.

for a start doing something to get District pitches up to scratch, most are a disgrace, this year most games been washed out or played on a minefield yet the A1 turf sides get out and play most weeks. Few weeks ago when the rain came I was out and about and drove past walkerville Oval, there it was, covers on the pitch area, went for a look at Prospect, no covers on when I got there and that was after a decent dump of rain. Know it is the responsibilty of various councils but if the SACA were serious on District Cricket they would have plans in place to ensure if rain was on the way to have all A grade district side pitches covered. On saying this I have only checked on that one occasion and cannot speak for other clubs/councils/grounds but appears to be a hell of alot of A grade District cricket either not proceeding or some horrid scores on what must be mindfield pitches. No wonder out State side struggles

He used to live in craigmore but not sure if this was during his seahorse days. When i worked at the sac as a junior coach, he used to give me w lift to work every now and then.

Wonder what he'll try his hand at now and who the replacement will be?
