A cryptic message left as a status update on the player's Facebook page said: "leaving pakistan cricket because get bad msg fr 1 man fr lose the match in last game." The last match that his Facebook status seems to refer to is the fourth ODI of the series, another closely-fought thriller, in which Haider's unbeaten 19 took Pakistan to victory with one wicket and one ball to spare.

Raza Haider, Zulqarnain's brother, said the wicketkeeper had reportedly received threats. "I spoke to Zulqarnain after the fourth ODI and he told me he had received some kind of threats after that game, but he gave no details," Raza said.

DUBAI: Pakistan wicket-keeper Zulqarnain Haider has gone missing from the team’s hotel in Dubai and did not come to the ground for Monday’s One-Day International against South Africa, team manager Intikhab Alam said.

“I can’t make much comment on this, but I can only confirm that Haider did not come with the team to the ground and we are looking for him,” Alam told reporters.

The 24-year-old Haider was fined 500 dirhams (136 dollars) on Sunday after he broke curfew hours imposed by the team management.

Haider scored a match-winning 19 not out to help Pakistan win the fourth one-day International played here on Friday which levelled the five-match series 2-2.

The fifth and final match will be played on Monday.

Haider sent a SMS text message to a Pakistani journalist and posted a message on his facebook page which both read: “leaving Pakistan cricket because get bad msg fr 1 man fr lose the match in last game.”

Haider’s family members told a local channel in Pakistan that they had no new information about him but that they were worried about his welfare.

Pakistan Cricket Board media spokesman Nadeem Sarwar said Dubai police had been informed.

“Haider had taken away his passport from the team management on Sunday night and we have reported the matter of him missing to the Dubai Police and to the ICC’s (International Cricket Council) Anti-corruption Unit,” Sarwar told reporters.

In Pakistan, Senior Superintendent of Police Rana Faisal said security was provided for Haider’s family in Lahore.

“We have deployed a dozen police officials at Haider’s residence, so that they can be guarded properly if there is any threat,” Faisal told local media.

He's turned up in London apparently.

Do England need a new keeper?

Just read on CricInfo that he has spoken to Pakistani tv channel, GEO and confirmed he has fled due to threats made regarding match-fixing. He was asked to throw the 4th ODI vs SA but refused and has been threatened. Pakistani police & security personnel are guarding his family back in Pakistan. A very, very sad state of affairs. I have always wondered how much of this match-fixing/spot betting saga is down to player greed or whether they have been 'forced' by others. I applaud the bloke for having the courage to resist/go public although the details are still a bit sketchy.

Unsurprisingly it's all over the news here. Latest is that he's now announced his retirement...

The ICC are a disgrace. Cricket has become a farce. Pakistan should be kicked out before more people get killed.

This Asian take over of cricket has stuffed it up. 10% of cricket is now worth watching. 90% is just junk.

Not pakistans fault. Its the pricks running the bookies. Got a mate who worked in india for 7 years, he said everything is corrupt and dodgy overthere. This is where most of the betting and threats would come from

Watched the end of game 4 the other night and sometimes you can't believe the things that are happening.
South Africa did more to lose it than Pakistan did to win it.
The power plays give the bookies more opportunities to rig games.
