Per comments in another thread I'm not getting the Steve Smith love affair. They have picked Hauritz (that's another story) and Doherty as the spinners. Is Smith getting selected as a specialist batter considered to be better than Ferg or even Warner?

Love to hear your opinions, cause at the moment I just don't get it, other than he is from NSW with a bit of potential. Why the free ride?

Smith has a heap of potential and I'm glad the selectors are giving a young lad an opportunity, but to be picked in the side he really needs to bowl more, or he needs to have more of a role like Cameron White, who's bowling very rarely these days.

On foxsports during the naming of the side, they had highlights of Doherty taking wickets, Haddin hitting sixes and Hauritz getting belted LMAO.

Dont begrudge doherty's selection, but wasn't he left out of the tasmanian team behind krejza two weeks ago? Bit strange that he has now been picked for aust if so.

Doherty...

Unlike my comments re a couple of other left field selections in the shorter game, I think Doherty could be an "X" factor (terrible joke).

Good wickets per game average domestically, averages just over 18 with the bat- not shabby for a no. 8 or 9...

Actually rate him a bit... :D

Oh well that's done & dusted then. Go and ask Warnie & Murali what they think of Hauritz, they both know something about spin bowling.

Muralidaran defended Hauritz’s disappointing returns saying that India is an extremely difficult place to bowl spin.

“I think he has done well on the recent Indian tour, it’s a hard place to get figures there, (especially) for a spinner because the Indians play spin so well. But you can’t just let him go because of one or two matches,” Fox Sports quoted Muralidaran, as saying.

“You have to give him another opportunity and see. The Ashes is a big thing for Australia and you need your best starting XI, so if he doesn’t make it that’s up to the selectors.”

“He’s a good bowler and proven in the past he can take wickets. The mentality [between Sri Lanka and Australia] is different because we go with spin most of the time, and Australia go with fast bowlers, so it really is up to selectors,” he added.

Also:

Warne has not been alone in criticising Ponting's use and captaincy of Hauritz this tour with former Indian slow bowler Bishen Bedi saying he wasn't sure that the Tasmania ''was a very good spinner's captain''.

''The way Nathan Hauritz is handled is wrong. People have to have more faith in him. I think he is a brilliant off-spinner. He's used as a stock bowler, but I think he is better than that if they let him attack.''

Of course they would be, neither of them scored a run in India.

You're right, Warnie and Murali know a bit about spin bowling.
For starters they know how to spin the ball.
If they set their own field, you can bet they'll bowl to it.
that's two advantages they have over Hauritz, in fact I can't think of ONE positive he brings to the team except maybe some hair care products.

If you think he deserves a spot, good on you.
I don't rate him, never have, never will.

Just tell me 1 or 2 positives he brings to the team........................PLEASE..............I'm dying to know what they are.
