Our State Mate

The state of our cricket
There seems to be a stagnate of young cricketers ebbing into the SS team
SA has futhered its squad with allstate importations

The eleven for the first SS gig in 2010
HARRIS.....SA
SMITH......SA
KLINGER....VI
BORGAS.......SA
BLIZZARD....VI
MANOU.......SA
OBREIN........NS
CHRISTIAN...NS
DUVAL.........SA-TA-SA
CASSELL.......VI
EDMONDSON..WA

For the sake of sakes I will endorse Duvall as a recruit
That leaves 4 of the squad [as I believe] being SA players

So I will ask the question, which players shall SA recruit in 2011/2012 to replace the 4 local boys ?
This is my replacement SS list of players not getting regular gig for thier states as of now
HARRIS-JEWELL
SMITH - BIRT
BORGAS-POMERSBACH
MANOU-CROTHSWAITE

Then we can call our team the South Allaustralians

Ok , enough bullcrapping, whats the solution for home grown talent ?
Klinger, Christian have been very good for SA cricket and I say dont say never recruit
BUT
We cant expect to be a dominant state until we produce some more of our own gooduns

We need to have NostraMALdamus pick out a few more roughies, and we'll be up there...

Seriously though, the question has been whizzing around my head too, and no answers...

The old chestnut need to reduce amount of district sides or split district cricket into two divisions ala division 1 being the best then division 2.

I dont follow district cricket intensly close but which district cricketers would you replace to 'recruits' with.

Maybe they need to have a shortened district season followed by a super league featuring the best/developing players from each district team.

Teams could be grouped for example;

Southern - Glenelg, Southern District, Sturt
Northern - Tea Tree Gully, Northern Districts, Prospect
Eastern - East Torrens, Adelaide, Kensington, Adelaide University
Western - Woodville, West Torrens, Port Adelaide

Could even set up a under 21 comp to run at the same time.
Need to be careful of older players clogging up the system. They may be better players at that stage of the career however the younger players need to be exposed to a better standard of cricket so their needs to be a balance.
Get some sponsors on board.
Continue on with the other grades for the full season.

I don't think reducing the number of District teams will assist in the long term as less cricketers will be playing the game.

i've seen some super talented young cricketers in my area over the last 20 years and i reckon that about 90% of them have given cricket the flick by the time they're 20 to concentrate on footy, Shaun Tait being one of the few exceptions that i know of.

From that i deduce that cricket is a poor 2nd cousin to footy in the eyes of young sportsman when confronted with making a choice between the two.
Most probably the reasons being that Footy provides more of an opportunity to make it at the top level and also BIG $$$$ can be made at a lot earlier age.

Just off the top of my head Simon Goodwin, James Moss, Alex Carey and Matthew Bode are examples of this. All were Australian under 19 reps.

There is no doubt that number of Grade Clubs is to high, however SACA dont have the balls to get rid of any. Uni should be first to go naturally with no junior set up.

As for older players clogging the system up, I dont think there is an issue with this anymore. When i first started playing Seniors, the C and D grade was full of Ex A grade cricketers and or blokes that never made the grade but played at the club still. It made it extremely hard for the younger blokes to get a crack.

In recent years the C & D grade comps have most definately become the 'development grades'. Last week, i had 1x 15 yo, 4x 16 yo, 1x 17yo and the rest under 25yo. The other teams we play are slightly older say average age of 22-24max. The D Grade was even younger. These kids are extremely talented, however they will take time to develop consistancy and not all can be like a Travis Head who made 50 on the weekend in the A grade at 16yo.

I think an under 18 grade instead of D Grade would be good for sure (minus Uni). I know in my Shell Shield years the competition and standard was exceptional and the players lifted. You were the best under 17 players in the state and you got treated like A graders. We had blokes like Chad Sayers, Tim Davey, Nic Bailey, Tim Evans, Russel Biar, Simon Weise, Corey KNight, Gary Putland, Jake Haberfield etc etc that all played A Grade/Second 11. However there were blokes that missed out on playing and yet have ended up playing A grade. Brendan Freeman is a prime example from TTG he missed out on a game in the Shell Shield comp when i played, yet took 5 for in the 1s on the weekend. An under 18 comp will develop these kids to an Age they can compete with men better and the standard of that comp would be much higher than D grade IMO

SACA don't have the power to get rid of any. The Grade Cricket Committee decide and SACA have no vote on that committee - the 13 Grade clubs do. Campaign your own club to have the numbers reduced if you feel strongly about it.

Same for U18 comp instead of D Grade. Get the ball rolling, speak to your delegate (ha! As if any of them are there for the benefit of cricket).

No one will be willing to part with tradition. Geographically it's messy, too many clubs too close to each other. You wouldn't expect anyone to want to merge. Maybe the SACA should merge with ATCA and have a relegation/promotion system to limit the amount of clubs in the Premier Grade and hopefully have a better talent pool playing against each other.
IMO the problem with the Redbacks is that the jump to first class level is too far from A Grade district.
Just an opinion.

No, SACA and ATCA need to stay seperate as once again an ATCA B grade will be alot worse than a grade cricket B grade! wont work

But the schrapnel of A Grade district would compete well with the upper echelon of ATCA. Just a thought mate, it's broken and needs repairing but no one is willing to part with tradition which is understandable.

Yeah, agreed it needs fixing however there must be a stand alone comp without promotion/relegation as some quiality players wont leave their junior clubs so will play lower grades and not go anywhere

Again, the Grade clubs would have to vote on such a proposal as a merger with ATCA.

Shoot the old farts who vote!

I put together a bit of a rant last night when I was drugged up in hospital recovering from a shoulder op and posted in the SA vs NSW thread. Mal has since pointed out that it would fit in here, so here it is:

Some of the decisions by the SACA are a joke. For so many years now we've been playing all of these half arsed allrounders that can neither bat or bowl well enough to make an impact in the 4 day game and concentrating our efforts on one day cricket thinking that will also work in the Shield Comp. Then we let Harris go when he was at his peak and get rid of Cossie so we can field a team with only 4 South Aussies in the line up this week. Admittedly George and Ferguson may make us more competitive but it's hard to see us winning enough games to even finish in the top half this season. How about we:

1. Fix the district comp.
2. Start concentrating on Shield Cricket rather than T20 crap.
3. Nurture our own talent, e.g. Putland, Haberfield and the likes of Cossie etc. before recruiting blokes who couldn't make it at other states!

To think we flicked blokes like Blewett and Lehmann when they still had so much to offer and lost Gillespie as a potential bowling coach just to serve up this half baked crap.

Ok, rant complete.

How could they have picked Cassel over Putland in the 4 dayer last week!?

>please don't avoid the swear filter< disgrace!
