Spilt innings One Day cricket

Cricket Australia has listened to the public but ignored its players after pushing through a split-innings one-day domestic trial before the national team attempts a fourth consecutive victory at next year's World Cup. The introduction of the 45-over format means the country's only 50-over matches in 2010-11 will occur at international level.
In an unusual effort to counter the imbalance, Cricket Australia is already considering private fixtures for fringe members of the World Cup squad if they are short of game-time in the global format. The change towards the four-innings regulations for the entire domestic one-day tournament over-ruled the initial plan to break up the event, which would have scheduled traditional fixtures when the international representatives were available.
Cricket Australia could be sorely disappointed if it hopes its new split-innings format will eliminate the slow-moving middle overs from one-dayers. The concept was trialled in England's county second XI competition this year and it often resulted in a cautious brand of "handbrake" batting at the end of the first innings and the start of the second.
Cricket Australia's format will give teams only 10 wickets across the entire match, so the first innings could be a grind as the top order builds a platform without losing too many batsmen. The Victoria legspinner Bryce McGain has been playing with Essex this month and said the feedback he received from the men involved in the county trial was that momentum was difficult to generate.

This ridiculous new preposed format is more likely to turn fans away from the game than attract new ones.
It wont be until the 50 over game is dead and buried before people realise how good it was.
The problem was that there were simply toooo many programmed which turned people off it. Two teams playing a meaningless 7 match series in 12 days which has happened regularly in recent years has killed the interest in it.
Can also see interest in the 20/20 game dropping off pretty quick if they program too many of them.

I reckon if I had to post on the matter I would have almost posted word for word what JJ has

All for 40 over one dayers (never a fan of the 10-20 overs in the middle of a one dayer where the batters just push singles before waiting to tee-off) but am dead against split innings, thats just crazy.

I will not watch one of these matches. Ever. Period.
Since 96, the "first fifteen" overs of a ODI were about the good aggressive start, and watching Gilchrist, Hayden, Jayasuriya, Sehwag teeing off early was a joy.
"Fifteen to forty" could be a bore. Either a side's failed in the first fifteen, so they just bat time before a last ditch assault at the end, or they've had a good start, and are content to nudge and nurdle runs.
The exceptions are the elite players, Ponting (five years ago, not now), Tendulkar, Laxman, who were able to keep up a healthy scoring rate in the middle (watching Kallis, Collingwood, Clarke in the middle overs is an organised bore), and then you have then last ten.
JUNK TIME! Watching Afridi, Symonds, Pollard, McCullum, Pietersen, Boucher, in the last ten is some of the most amazing cricket you will see.
Now a few of the above lads aren't playing anymore, or can't do what they used to, but new heroes will emerge.
They won't be able to emerge in a 2 x T20 world, because they can't bat for long enough, and all of a sudden, our players, who can bat forever and score Test match 200's, will be content with a "seventeen ball 35."
Utter carp. I might have to follow Test cricket and Lawn Bowls now...

Appalling decision.
Smacks of "somebody came up with T20. Let's make a name for ourselves"

I think it's fine to give this a run as a couple of exhibition games but to have it as our domestic cricket competition is pure lunacy.

I thought that's what T20 was...
When we played NZ with Punter, Catfish and co, with Chris Cairns sporting a massive 'fro, and McGrath feinting bowling underarm...
Now look at it...

Yep I'm out. I'm getting rid of the Foxtel after the basketball World Championships so thankfully won't have to watch much (if any) of this crap.

According to my calculations, the vote on this thread is 7 - 0 AGAINST, so how is that listening to the public ??

i'll hold judgement until i see it.
I am interested on feedback from England where the players said it didn't really work when they trialled it.
I don't think i am the only one out there who has lost interest in 50 over cricket to a large extent. Whether it's excessive programming or the emergence of t20 making the 50 over format seem way too long I'm not sure. A game that takes 10 hours from start to finish with 3 of those hours an uninteresting push-singles-fest needs some sort of change. Whether split innings is the answer I am not sure.
My crystal ball says it's another nail in the coffin for the 50 over format. The day of 2 forms of cricket (tests and t20) is coming I reckon.

Very good REB!
When I first heard about it, I thought you would have been able to use 10 wickets in each split, but obviously that isn't the case which I think is no good. A 2 x T20 could make that more interesting possibly.
I think if they want to liven up the 50 over game, they should just make 2 fielders outside the circle the norm, not the exception and give the bowling team a 5 over Power Play (or 2), where they can have more outside the circle to try and rein a batsman in who has gotten away from them. Which then provides a test of patience for the batter. It also would promote more attacking cricket from the fielding side, by trying to bowl to get wickets rather than just to contain. My thoughts anyway...

Well, I'll be attending the standard 50 over FRC games, and then will refuse to attend the split innings matches as it's a complete and utter farce.

There will be standard 50 over ODD games? I thought this format was replacing them altogether?
Also will these hybrid games now be considered First Class games?

they shouldn't considered as 'List A' games.
