How refreshing

Postby rod_rooster » Wed Jul 14, 2010 11:09 pm

The cricinfo commentary team just posted the following email that was sent to them. How very well it sums things up:

"Was at Lord's yesterday and what a total pleasure it was," says Chris Phillips. "Five slips, bowling to attack and not just contain, fine skills all round, white clothes, no advertising on the ground and a crowd of cricket fans, not drunks dressed as Elvis. This MUST survive. It will always attract a good crowd, at least in England, and one day the rest of the world will recover its senses and remember what makes cricket such a compelling and beautiful game."

As a traditionalist I love it. This is the first cricket of the England tour I've watched.
But...always attract crowds? I'm not so sure...I guess it depends what you mean by 'crowds'.

Just from watching the cricket last night, I though the crowd was pretty good considering it's a neutral test.

London has a large Pakistani population, where are they? I thought the crowd might be larger given the population.

However, look at the crowds across Australia this summer just gone, I know it wasn't a premium contest, but...

I'll look forward to this summer though, big crowds and lots of pasty Poms visiting paradise, boosting the crowds.

Pretty sure it was....

People should just enjoy Test cricket instead of comparing it to the shortened version. It is getting a bit pathetic really. Just think about all the money that pours in from the 20/20 stuff. You might not like it but it is helping the game a bit. Plus I see plenty of drunks in costumes during Test cricket too!

I have a feeling that this coming summers crowds will be some of the biggest if not the biggest we've ever seen and every day of every test will be sold out very quickly.

IMO it depends on how good the quality of cricket is and if Australia is challenged well enough.
