New South Wales fast bowler Aaron Bird has retired, bringing an end to a first-class career blighted by a suspect bowling action. He will continue to play grade cricket for Canterbury-Bankstown.

Cricket has scored a rare victory over Australian rules football with the multi-talented teenager Alex Keath choosing bat and ball over a potentially lucrative AFL career. Keath, 18, has signed a several-year contract with Cricket Victoria despite the probability that he would play senior AFL football next year.

An allrounder who has been compared to his fellow Victorian Andrew McDonald, Keath was part of the Australia team that won the Under-19 World Cup. He scored 216 runs at 43.20 to be the eighth leading scorer in the tournament, and also collected six wickets at 16.33 with his medium-pace bowling.

However, his football prospects appeared just as promising when he was named as one of the dozen 17-year-olds chosen by the newly-formed Gold Coast club, which will make its first appearance in the AFL in 2011. The Victoria coach Greg Shipperd said Keath could be ready to make his state debut next summer, although 2011-12 was more realistic.

Andrew Symonds has stepped up his commitment to Queensland by signing a Twenty20 contract with the state for next summer. The Bulls have named their squad for 2010-11 with five players axed from last season's list, including the batsmen Glen Batticciotto and Nick Kruger, and the fast bowler Grant Sullivan.

Nick Jewell was the major omission from the squad after declining a contract to focus on his coaching career at club and under-age levels. However, Jewell has not retired and will continue to play district cricket in Melbourne and be available for selection, having been one of Victoria's most consistent performers over the past few years.

Clark is being considered as a full-time captain and Bracken will also have a mentoring role as the Blues aim to develop their exciting young talent.

Australia's domestic Big Bash tournament will grow by nearly two weeks next summer, with the tournament set to stretch from late December to early February. In what is likely to be the last domestic Twenty20 tournament in its current format, the fixture has been expanded to 20 matches to ensure each team plays three home and three away games.

However, it is expected that this will be the final season during which the traditional state sides will compete in the Twenty20 competition. Cricket Australia is planning an eight-team tournament featuring city-based sides for its Twenty20 competition from 2011-12, with two new teams expected to come from growth areas in New South Wales, Victoria or Queensland.
