RIP Alec Bedser

Postby trev » Tue Apr 06, 2010 5:21 pm

Legendary England cricketer Alec Bedser has died at the age of 91.
A prolific bowler, he took 236 wickets in 51 Test matches and was a selector for 23 years.

He famously vomited over the boundary at Adelaide Oval due to the heat but returned to bowl his next over.

My Fav story about him involves the time when scientists from Cambridge University came up with an equation that
was meant to prove that it was scientifically impossible for a bowler to swing the ball in the air.

An unknown Batsmen wrote to the Times debunking the theory with one line

"Any Scientist who believes that should try facing up to Alec Bedser on a damp July morning!"
"Pressure? Pressure is a Messerschmidt up your arse. Playing cricket is not."

Australian Hall of Famer Arthur Morris was always considered in some quarters as Alec Bedser's bunny as he was the batsman most dismissed by Bedser. However, Morris said once that although he did have a lot of difficulty with Bedser, the player he opened the batting with was dismissed far more times by Bedser than he ever was :)
