Have we got the best batch of under 23's coming through since the likes of Law, Bevan, Martyn, McGrath etc ?

Smith, Hazlewood, Henriques, Khawaja, George, Mitch Marsh and HUghes all look as if they'll play for AUS and do well.
Any others coming through that are under 23 you reckon are certs for a long career with higher honours ?

Jaques is 29 so you can count him out of that group. as for the rest the potential is there but there doesn't seem to be any super star candidates maybe with the exception of Henriques.
Always hard to plot the career path of cricketers i think due to maturing later in their careers and also being able to play past the age most other sportsmen retire.

WE should count Hauritz out of this group as well. If he hadn't moved to NSW, he'd be playing 2nd 11 cricket somewhere. Starc, Hazelwood and Kulaja will be at the forefront simply 'cos they are from NSW.

ORD, I'm normally critical of how easy it is for some players that come from NSW to get an AUS call up.
Hauritz and Casson are great examples.
I don;t think anyone can disagree that Khawaja, Smith and Hazlewood will definitely represent AUS.
Hazlewoods spell against the VICS was top notch for such a young lad.
Mitch Marsh and George are probably classed as outsiders at this stage but they'll be around the mark IMO.

Khawaja will be a superstar... will play alot of test cricket

Yeah for sure mate, some real quality coming through. The way Hazlewood and Starc are bowling now, you can only imagine how they're going to progress. Khawaja, wow, top notch. Watching him the other night his technique really stood out. No real flaws and he times the ball beautifully, not to mention he seems to have a pretty handy temperament.

Chuck in Hughes, M. Marsh, McDermott, this Pattinson kid, it's a pretty damn impressive group. The trouble right now is most of these guys are in the age group where we're not going to see them for another few years, and our current text XI is looking stale enough as it is. It might be a bit of a slog for the immediate future but our prospects for improvement over the long term look good without a doubt.

Geez you blokes get excited easisly. Fair dinkum, some young bloke grabs a bag of wickets or slogs a quickfire ton and yous label them as stars of the future.
Many years ago, 2 young blokes called Hookes and Lehmann peeled off ton after ton at sheild level and were considering superstars at the time yet only had limited time in the Aussie team.
Shaun Tait, Dan Cullen and Cullen Bailey are recent young guns given huge wraps a few years ago and are repidly fading into obscurity.
My point is that it aint all that it seems at times.

Yeah and if Lehmann and Hookes had played for NSW how much longer would have they played in the Australian side, a hell of a lot longer

Starc, Khawaja and Hazlewood will all go on to play test cricket, very confident in that. The others form a group that we should be optimistic about. It means stronger competition at domestic level and that can only be good for eventually improving our performances at test level.

As far as the here and now goes, we did have this legend among men known as the Hilf gunning it up for us but his knee has fallen off. Life's a bitch sometimes.

You mean like the 8 wickets at over 40 that Warne had taken in five Shield matches prior to his debut???

There ya go people. 11 first class games, 15 wickets at 75.00, on a spinners wicket. Yes let's start comparing him to Warney.

Yep guilty as charged, comparing Smith with Warne up until 10:59 am (EDST) January 2nd, 1992.

I'll go out on a limb and say Smith won't be as good as Warney.

id defaintly like to add 'the ferg' to that list cant wait to see the lad play a test match although he is mid 20's isnt he?

I get it...i've found there point of downfall, They are South Aussies.
If they played for NSW, Tait would be opening the batting with Kat as well as the bowling (with the possibility of being vice captain), Cullen and Bailey would be the new Warne/MacGill combination!!!
