I just heard on ABC radio during the tea break that Benson has stated, it was a combination of the pressure the new referral system has placed on him and health issues, his reasons for leaving.

Sounds like he is a little precious by not liking having his decisions scrutinised.

I take that back if it proves to be the case that he has returned solely for health issues as mentioned in the link. But what is this game coming to if the umpires are quitting because of the pressure.

Kidding, right? How would you like every decision you make challenged when you are being paid to make those decisions?

If they refer one he got wrong, he looks foolish. If they refer on he got right, it shows the players dont trust his judgement. For mine, it comes down to trust. I fully understand his stance.

Nah i don't agree Booney.

He doesn't need the players to "trust" him he just needs to make as many decisions correct as he can and the ones the players feel may not be right can be scrutinised.

It is about improving the spectacle of the game for me. People don't go to the games to watch umpires make mistakes they go to watch the Pontings of the world make hundreds and bowlers take wickets.

Mark Benson has moved to quash speculation of his impending retirement from the ICC's elite panel of umpires, and has issued a statement declaring that his withdrawal from the recently concluded second Test between Australia and West Indies in Adelaide was entirely due to health reasons.

How can the spectacle be improved when players are now allowed to question umpires decisions. The game has been built on players accepting the umpires decision good or bad.
