First test - Aus v West Indies

Postby Dogwatcher » Thu Nov 26, 2009 10:42 am

Hmmmm....very little interest in this series. Not even a thread here until three overs into the match.

Anyway, Australia 1-0.

Watson LBW not playing a shot to Taylor. 10/19 dismissals LBW.

Will this dismissal see the old question about Watson resurfacing?

Another Watson failure in Test Cricket
His first as an opener ....

Taylor, Hughes, Rogers, Jaques all appealed with gusto

Leg Before Watson is at it again.

At work so can't see the match but if he is not offering a shot then good riddance. Should have left his bat in the pavilion.

The only good thing about this test series, is we get to listen to Kerry O'Keefe on ABC Radio. He has me in stitches.
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep

No
Well you haven't seen everything then have you.

Was poor judgement by Watto...

I'm not going to bag Watto as he has come a long way this year but my question regarding his selection is this. Why replace a player who is thought to have a technical flaw he needs to work on (Hughes) with a player who has an even more obvious technical flaw that is exposed even more by him opening the batting?

I repeat
Another Watson failure at Test level
His first as an opening batsman ....

How about
Why open with Watto at the Gabba where he is a notorious duck maker in SS cricket

Nothing wrong with opening up with KAT and WATTO]at this time]
KAT non opener averages about 35 as an opener 50+
WATTO non opener averages about 20 as an opener about 45 [about 50 b4 today]

Having said all that both Hughes + Watto have techical defiencies
But at least WATTO is not scared of short pitched bowling, and bowls better than Hughes

I think they should shift Hussey to open if they are so desperate he stay in the side - and Watto can bat 5 or 6. Probably 6 as the all-rounder.

It shouldn't be a Hughes v Watto situation IMO. Should be Hughes v Hussey just like it was Hughes v Hayden.

He'll say he made his name in the middle order. I'd respond and say he's un-made his name in the middle order over the last 18 months.

What a freaking waste of time this referal system is. There was no certainty that was out, but they went for it anyway just to apply extra pressure on the batsman.

The formguide says otherwise
HUss the last 2 seasons has mainly struggled against fast bowlers who whizz the ball eyebrow length in Test matches
His recent good form is mainly in India for test matches and o/d matches where he is facing predominantly spinners and military meduims and the ball rears up thigh height or you cant bowl over a guys eyebrows
Quissentially he has become like a subcontinent batsman

B4 the last 2 seasons agree with you
I really hope he has a big summer with the willow and shuts up the critics though

Yes, it was a good observation

I have analysed his career by series and if you take out the India tour then his form slump is actually longer than it appears at first look.

TBH, I wouldn't even play him at all (as I have banged on about for ages on here) so the opener spot was a possible temporary solution. But, as Mal says, opening may worsen the problem.

I am sure he will tonk the Windies around all series and earn himself a reprieve from the critics like me.

Punter gone. 55.

2/126.

By the way, does anyone still call him Punter? Is that a good thing in today's cricket world, following all of the previous bookie allegations and the way gambling has enveloped the game?
