Cosgrove smashes record double

AUSTRALIA'S Mark Cosgrove belted a brutal unbeaten double hundred to hand his county side Glamorgan its best day of the county championship division two season overnight.

The 21-year-old South Australian's astonishing display of muscular hitting was the highest innings by a Glamorgan batsman against Derbyshire, beating Matthew Maynard's 176 at Chesterfield in 1992.

His career-best score of 233 not out from 258 balls with three sixes and 31 fours was out of a total of 3-378 at the close.

His partnership with Michael Powell was a Glamorgan record for any wicket against Derbyshire and at the close he was 233 not out from 258 balls with three sixes and 31 fours, out of a total of 3-378.

The left hander's knock also topped Roy Fredericks' 228 in 1972 - the previous best by a Glamorgan overseas player.

Cosgrove cut loose after lunch to score his second century of the season against Derbyshire after being dropped at point by Chris Taylor on 65 off Mo Sheikh.

That lapse proved expensive as he moved into overdrive.

He straight drove fast bowler Steffan Jones for his second six to reach three figures from only 97 balls with his second 50 coming off 36 balls.

Jones responded by hitting him on the helmet but although he needed some treatment and did not score for 20 balls, the onslaught continued as he powered to 150, with two sixes and 25 fours, from 145 balls.

He scored 124 in the afternoon session and there was no respite for the bowlers after tea as Powell opened up with some flowing extra cover drives.
Cosgrove passed his previous best of 184 against Victoria in the winter before Powell was lbw to Ian Hunter for 90, which came from 125 balls and included 13 fours.

He struck 74 on his limited-overs debut for Australia in Bangladesh on April 28.

If he keeps this up, he will certainly be putting pressure on players in the Australian Test middle order to play well.

Good to see.
Was Cosgrove one of the players that has ruffled the feathers of Cricket Australia by playing county cricket rather than training at the centre for excellence in Brisbane?
