I assume this is purely based on performance against England and not careers in general. If so not a bad effort. I'd have question marks over Lawry and Mark Waugh. Chappell's unlucky as has been pointed out. I think it's tough to make a call on players i haven't seen and judging purely on their record but players who were absolute stars of their time and played only against England such as Trumper, Hill, Armstrong, Spofforth etc. etc. would also be pretty unlucky. I like your idea of picking the best pure keeper as well but whilst i agree with that on the most part i do make an exception for Gilchrist. Interesting topic though. Who were the players you found hardest to leave out?

Mark Waugh before Greg Chappell, a bit of sacrilege there.

Yes It is picked purely on there form against England. Mark Waugh averaged 50 against the poms whch not many Australin batsman have done who have played more than 10 tests ( I think it is about 5 ). Greg Chappell and Ricky Ponting were unlucky. The only spot they could take would be Mark Waugh's, even though they made more tons,Waugh has a better average and made similar runs in less tests. Lawry made 7 tons against the Poms at an average of 48. M.Slater was a bit unlucky as he has a pretty good record against them. Millar only had a average of 33 with the bat but had a bowling average of 22. Lillee, McGrath, Warne pick themselves. Allderman and Thompson were next in line. Healy was my pick for the keepers spot. He made 3 tons against the poms at avg of 30 and is the best gloveman Australia has ever had. Gilchrist in 2005 was tormented by Flintoff in 2005 and dropped some crucial catches in that series. Was a close one but a qualitity keeper who averages 30 is good enough for me.

I presume that apart from the compulsory inclusion of Bradman, you're picking a post-war 'best-ever' side.

Michael Clarke is one of those batsman that have averaged over 50 against england now. and played over 10 tests. Good comeback after his shocking 05 series where he eventually got dropped after it.

Fair call, I suppose we are talking of 100+ years of test cricket though, nevertheless Pup has an outstanding record considering his poor 05 Ashes return.
Dizzy would have to somewhere in the mix aswell, he has had some excellent figures against the Poms, it would be interesting to see some actual data that could determine who has been the best performers.
Gilly, Marsh and Healy would be a fair argument aswell, although Marsh's batting isn't up to the standard of Healy and Gilly, his glovework was far superior.

Marsh's glovework was not superior to Healy. Marsh's batting probably was but it fell away horribly in the second half of his career.

Dizzy would be long off making the team, 65 wkts at 29. There would be at least 10 quicks in front of him.
Gilly - 20 Tests, 1083 Runs, 100's = 3, Avg 45.12, Ct 89 St 7
Heals - 33 Tests, 1269 Runs, 100's = 2, Avg 30.95, Ct 123 St 12
Marsh - 42 Tests, 1633 Runs, 100's = 1, Avg 27.21, Ct 141, St 7

Fair enough, just going by the 8/38 IIRC.

Hayden struggled in England conditions, pretty light on for bowling,

Think you should look pre covers and beyond. Hell the wickets Bradman and co played on were minefields, once covers came in made it alot better, over the 45 years i can remember of Ashes series I dont think you could pick your best 12, been way way many more that continually played at a high standard against the Poms, imagaine a 4 prong pace attack of Lillee, Thomson, McGrath & Gillesppe backed up by Warne, Warney may well not get a bowl

You'd only pick 10 REB? Sure with that lineup you probably would rarely need the 11th player but in case of injury you may like to pick another bowler and have a full side ;) Dare i suggest Miller could be the player you're looking for?
