Test Cricket World Cup

Postby The Cadet » Sun Jul 19, 2009 7:18 pm

With all the talk of Test cricket dying and 20/20 taking over I wonder If a Test Match world cup would help to keep test cricket the best format of them all. This is how the Test world cup could work.

GROUP A
Australia (1)
Pakistan (6)
Bangaladesh (9)

GROUP B
South Africa (2)
England (5)
New Zealand (8)

GROUP C
India (3)
Sri Lanka (4)
West Indies (7)

The highest ranked team to be the host for there group. 30 points for a win 10 for a draw. The two leading Teams will then play off in a best out of two series one home one away to decide the champiom. To be held every 4 years. Heres a mock draw below for 2011. If teams at the end of group stage are locked on same points the team that has made the most runs plus 20 points for each wicket they have taken will advance to the next group

Ban V Pak Wacca 14 Jan - 18 Group A
Aus V Pak Adelaide Oval Jan 26 -30
Aus V Ban SCG Feb 5 -9

South Af V Eng Cape Town 14 Jan - 18 Group B
Eng V New Z Durban Jan 26 - 30
Sout Af V New Z Pretoria Feb 5 - 9

India V West I Mohali 14 Jan - 18 Group C
West I V Sri L Mumbai Jan 26 - 30
India V Sri L Calcutta Feb 5 - 9

GRAND FINAL

Yeah not bad. Maybe lose ranks 7,8,9 that way keeps emphasis on staying successful in test arena, then have 2 groups of 3 say 1,4,5 and 2,3,6 playing Home and Away against their groups, with the top 2 playing a one-off in the highest ranked nation.
Equates to a maximum of 5 tests, doesnt have to be over a short period of time could stretch it out over the year ala soccer champions leagues.
