Western Australia only played 4 matches between 1947/48 and 1953/54.
This was a "probationary" period for them, and to compensate for having played 3 less matches than the other 4 states, the points for all states were worked out on a percentage basis - (points/possible points)*100
I don't know why the 1954/55 season had teams only playing each other once (and WA just two matches), but in 1955/56, WA had their first full home and away program.
Tasmania only played 5 matches per season between 1977/78 and 1981/82. Again, this was a "probationary" period for them, but this time to compensate less matches than the other 5 states, their points was multiplied by 9 and divided by 5.
Final at the end of the home and away season first implemented in 1982/83.
Tasmanias' first season of a full home and away program was in 1982/83.

In the last six seasons, there has been a pattern for SA:
6th, 5th, 3rd, 6th, 5th, 3rd

In that promising season of 2005/06, who could have thought 2006/07 would turn out like it did. It's time for at the very least a finals berth next season, and really, anything less is unacceptable.

Whichever way you look at it, cricket in this state has sucked for years.

If you want to look at the "earlier years" it was also an opportunity to boost our winners tally.

Queensland for a long time were the same. In fact, their whole history looks a bit like Centrals does - no flags for a long time, plenty of finals losses, then they all come in a rush.

On that theory Spelly, I'd say that SACA has been exactly like SAFC.

And I'm hoping we don't have the same run that South did between 2006/07 - promising 2006, dismal 2007. That happened to the Redbacks in the same timespan anyway.

Another observation (this will change next weekend, barring a major upset), Victoria has only won two Shields since 1980/81, like SA.

And the last three seasons we have won the title, Victoria has finished last.

Well it's a spoon for us but still there are plenty of positives overall. It was always going to be tough losing the Kat and at times our lineup was unrecognisable. The weather robbed us of victory against the Worriers but we've yet again produced the latest wonderboy of Australian Cricket.

By adding up the positions of each side at the end of the season and dividing that by the total number of positions we can work out the following:

Example:
One side finishes 2nd, 3rd, 1st, 5th, 5th, 3rd over a 6 year period. This amounts to a total of 19.
Now in a six team competition that is a total of 36 - 6 placings per season times no. of seasons.
19/36 equals 0.53.

This is each side:
NSW: 0.49
WA: 0.55
Vic: 0.56
SA: 0.71
Qld: 0.74
Tas: 0.75

So Queensland still hasn't quite caught up to SA yet after 62 seasons without a Shield win.

However SA leads the way when it comes to average seasons between wooden spoons:
SA: 2.5
Tas: 2.7
Qld: 3.3
Vic: 6.7
NSW: 11.9
WA: 12.4

And for the average no. of years between Shields:
NSW: 2.4
Vic: 4.12
WA: 4.13
SA: 8.2
