The team to tour the Veldt:
The squad is:
Ricky Ponting (captain): TAS, 34
Michael Clarke (vice-captain): NSW, 27
Doug Bollinger: NSW, 27
Brad Haddin: NSW, 31
Nathan Hauritz: NSW, 27
Ben Hilfenhaus: TAS, 25
Phillip Hughes: NSW, 20
Michael Hussey: WA, 33
Mitchell Johnson: WA, 27
Simon Katich: NSW, 33
Andrew McDonald: VIC, 27
Bryce McGain: VIC, 36
Marcus North: WA, 29
Peter Siddle: VIC, 24
Good squad IMO, North has been rewarded for the mountain of runs he made prior to his injury last year (he has been in the frame now for two years). I would to see him bat six instead of McDonald
McGain say no more - was supposed to make his debut in October, will be test player 408.
Hughes well obviously MALs spotting of this wunderkid 18 months ago has come to fruition... test player 407 come on down....
Take a bow MAL you been calling for this bloke's selection for over 12 months unlike the other Hughes Bandwagonners who have jumped on recently...

No Krejza? I would play him before Hauritz.

Me too. Aren't spinners supposed to spin the ball. Hauritz bowls dead straight.

Obviously not looking for the wicket taking option, rather the control option

Krejza takes wickets ... but he goes for PLENTY. He needs to work on his control before he plays again. Not that he's far off, he'd be the next spinner in line.
Hauritz took enough wickets in the tests and recently for NSW and deserves his spot
I had the squad spot on except for North (I had Jaques). However, I understand Jaques is a risk coming back from injury, we need a fit squad.

My prediction for the first against SA is Hughes in the vacant spot and McGain in for Hauritz. In SA it is suited to the quicker bowlers and wouldn't be surprise if we play 4 fast bowlers.

Were going to get pumped 3-0, what's the deal with taking 2 spinners that are both poo, an extra batsman would've been the call IMO, Clarke is good enough to bowl some spinners and the Katman if we're desperate, there's no pointhaving a spinner just for the sake of having a spinner, Pup's better than both of them.

I'd drag Murray Bennett out of retirement and play him before either of them, used to love them tinted specs.

Stan's Test Side:
1. Katich
2. Hughes
3. Ponting
4. Clarke
5. M.Hussey
6. M.North
7. Haddin
8. Johnson
9. McGain
10. Peter Siddle
11. Ben Hilfenhaus
12. Bollinger
Based on McDonalds first effort, hes probably a bit stiff to miss out, but I feel that North is a better option as our batting really has been poo at times.
I think since we are taking McGain in he goes, its a case of now or never really. And well Bollinger.......I think the Hilf is the way to go. I really feel we need to get him in the side.
Anyway thats my side, hopefully we can get into them.

The selectors are always going to play a spinner because they're old fashioned. I agree with LM. If they aren't good enough play an extra batsman. At least give McGain a chance first though.

McDonald isn't stiff to miss out, he's horse5hit. McGain in for Horrie, North for McDonald and Hughes for Haydos.

1.Simon Katich
2.Phillip Hughes
3.Ricky Ponting (Capt)

5.Mike Hussey
6.Andrew McDonald
7.Brad Haddin (Wkeep)
8.Mitchell Johnson
9.Peter Siddle
10.Bryce McGain
11.The Hilf
I don't know how well McGain bats, so whether he should be ten or eleven, i don't know.
Surely they have to pick Hilf tho.

Probably.
Okay, so he didn't set the world alight with his ODI appearances, but IMO he bowled reasonably well for the most part.
He
did swing the ball, not massively as people were perhaps expecting, but in one day cricket too much swing is a problem.
He has good pace and given the right opportunities (particularly in England), he should do well.
