Shane Watson makes way for Peter Siddle

Postby hearts on fire » Sun Nov 23, 2008 3:21 pm

All-rounder Shane Watson has been omitted from the Australian squad ahead of the second 3 Mobile Test against New Zealand in Adelaide which begins on Friday.

Victorian paceman Peter Siddle replaces Watson in the 12-man squad after the Queenslander recorded scores of one and five and match figures of 2-54 during the first Test in Brisbane.

National Selection Panel chairman Andrew Hilditch said Watson was unlucky to be left out of the team following a solid tour of India which saw him score 170 runs at 24.28, including his highest Test knock of 78 in the second Test at Mohali, and capture 10 wickets at 32.10, including his best Test bowling figures of 4-42 in the fourth Test at Nagpur.

"It is obviously disappointing for Shane Watson to be omitted from the Test 12 after playing well for us during the four-Test period in India and this week at the Gabba," Hilditch said.

"We have been very pleased with Shane’s development, but for the Adelaide Test our intention is to play a specialist spinner rather than the make-up used successfully in the first Test."

"Having made that decision we thought it was important that Shane took the opportunity to play for Queensland to ensure he had played as much cricket as possible leading in to the remainder of what is a very important Australian summer."

Australia leads the 3 Mobile two-Test series against the Black Caps 1-0 following its 149-run victory at the Gabba on Sunday.

Fair call, let him go back and dominate for Queensland and get in some form with the bat. I'm okay with this.

Would've been nice to hold up my 10 metre Watto sign at the game though.

He should of never been picked to tour India after the shocking season he had with QLD last year. Not a big wicket taker and after 8 tests has a batting average of 19 so dosn't look to me a good enough prospect with the bat either. I wish the selectors would stop picking a team on IPL 20/20 form. Next we will probably have S.Marsh and Ronchi in the test team   .

Heres the idea, dont play an allrounder that is not good enough. the only allrounder in Australian cricket at the moment that should be in the side is M.Clarke. Watson, well I thought he was good on the indian tour but seems to be out now, and well symonds, you tell me hes earnt his spot back!

My team for the Second Test:
Hayden
Katich
Ponting
M.Hussey
Clarke
D.Hussey
Haddin
Lee
Krezja
Johnson
Clark

12th P. Siddle

Play the extra batsmen. We really need it at the moment!
Read my reply. It is directed at you because you have double standards

Even more interesting would be the reasons why he was selected in the first test.......

I'm not sure how his age is relevant. He continues to fail time and time again when given chances he doesn't deserve. Surely the selectors will wise up to the fact that he is a dud soon enough. He just keeps making fools of them for selecting him.

That's a lot of pressure on him there. If he fails against SA then he's an even bigger dud than most people already think.
