Well I used to think Haddin was always next inline for the keeping job after Gilly left but mabye he has been waiting to long and gone stale or something. He has not done enough for my liking and I know its only early days but he needs to show something soon with the bat or else he needs to go. That dropped catch which was regulation catch for 1st slip was inexcusable, well I hope he can prove me wrong today and score 100 but time will tell i guess. Likely replacement for mine is Tim Paine liked the look of him from day dot very handy with the bat and keeps well.

Any other suggestions??

Firstly you mean weight not wait.

Secondly what he does with the bat is not an issue. He is in the side to keep wickets and that is what he should be judged on. Batting is a bonus for a wicket keeper and we will not see another Gilchrist.

Thirdly Haddin averages more with the bat in Test cricket than Ian Healy. Judge the guy on what he does with the gloves not the bat.

Fourthly he has been struggling a bit with the gloves but it's a tough gig in India so we should cut him some slack.

Fifthly i'm glad you named Paine as the next in line and not the over rated hack Ronchi as most people do. It's amazing how carried away people get with the odd one day slog or 20/20 slog. Watch the guys glovework. It's not very good and his batting isn't either.

he will just be a fill in for a year or two like Zoerer and a couple of others before Healy, then we should have someone step up who can stay in the side for 6-10 years ala Gilly, Heals.

Just conceding that we will not see another Gilchrist isn't the way to look at it imo rooster. There's no rule that says the country cannot produce another explosive wicketkeepter-batsman after another retires. Same goes for any great fast bowler, spinner or whatever else we've had. It just isn't likely, that's all.

However I disagree with your statement I quoted, because I am sure Haddin won his test spot as a wicketkeeper-batsman. The selectors would be expecting him to score runs because of his state record. Not that I know if he's the best technical keeper in Australia at the moment. Do you think he is?

These days I don't think you can go with the best technical keeper if he can't hold down number 7 (if he has to). And if Haddin can't then we need to find someone who can. They don't have to be a Gilchrist or a Sangakarra but they need to bat better than Heals.

other than Billy Murdoch and Wayne phillips (who weren't full time keepers in tehir test careers, Ian helay has the next best test batting average for Australain 'keepers after Gilchrist.

I'll take his 4 hundreds and 22 50s in Tests anyday over a keeper who can bat better when you look at his glovework. the number of times he batted with Steve Waugh and put on partnerships to get Australia out of trouble or put us in a winning position Old trafford 93, Gabba in 96, Gabba in 98, Old trafford in 97 etc.

mate Heals was a great batsamn for a 'keeper. not to mention his outstanding 'keeping ability that, your unfortuante I watched Ashes 97 last night on video and as an ex-keeper I still crack a fat everytime I see his legside stumping of bevan that got butcher at Old Trafford....

Mate if Haddin or any other future Australain 'keeper can bat as well as Healy I'll be a very happy Australian Cricket supporter.

Heals' batting ability has been diminshed as the immediate predecessor to Gilchrist. People forget how good he really was save for his first and last years in the jobs where he stuggled with teh abt to an extent.

Yes, fair enough. How about "they need to bat at least as well as Heals", instead.

My main gist was that Haddin is in the side as a keeper-batsman rather than a keeper-(any runs are a bonus) batsman.

I think Haddin's expectations with the bat are higher than Heals. But maybe that's just the Gilchrist shadow that Rod was talking about.

Healy was a far better gloveman than Gilchrist. Gilchrist is the better cricketer overall but his glovework had nothing on Healy. Gilchrist himself will be the first to admit this.

When people discuss wicketkeepers, they seem to talk only about glovework. Although it's a very important part of the job, a very much under-rated part of keeping is footwork. Healy's footwork was far superior to that of Gilchrist, enabling him to become a better gloveman.

AH your comments are exceptionally pertinent and RR you are spot on too. Hats off to Gilly as though hard work he became a very competent gloveman especially off the spinners. I know first hand how hard Warne is to 'keep to...

But comparing Gilly to healy in 'keeping ability is like comparing the redbacks to the test team....

Footwork is the problem with Haddin's batting and keeping at the moment I believe. Still, the constant knocking on this site is becoming tiresome. Why knock Haydos, The Kat, Punter, Pup, Haddin, Lee and Mitch when we have a perfectly good lemon to squeeze in Shane Watson? I went yesterday and saw a beautiful misfield up close and the site of him wearing a Baggy Green cap made me fill queasy.

Well REB I hope todays knock gives him the confidence to settle down and enjoy his test cricket. With the pressure off for a short time on his spot he can relax and get his feet and hands moving. Quite frankly, as a 'keeper of poor quality myself, I found myself embarrased watching his lack of footwork and sloppy glovework on Friday.

Hopefully now he shows us his true 'keeping ability which is quite good.

I really prefer this site to have less descriptions of the foreplay habits of posters noted here.
