As from 2008-09, the major domestic Australian competition will ne named the Sheffield Shield once more. For us "old-timers" and history minded people, it is great news.
Trouble is, I finally trained myself after all these years to start calling it the Pura Cup

Not before time. Was announced a while ago when Pura pulled their sponsorship. Great decision that i am sure everone will be pleased with. Hopefully they revert to awarding the actual shield as well. Best trophy in sport IMHO.

Hooray.
Will they now adjust the record books to show the last 8 or so years as "Sheffield Shield" as well?
You know it makes sense...

I think QLD was the last team to win the Sheffield Shield, before it changed to the Moo Moo Cup?

It's much purer this way.

trying to put a positive on it for the jellybacks, cos i dont think there will be too many positives this season with the squad that theyve picked

No, changed in 1999, we won in 1996 so probably 2 seasons after we won.

Well we can try and start the season positive and see how things go.
Lets look at the bowling. If tait can get back and start bowling well it will be something. The problem is we will need him to bowl well, very well all season. After him we have of course Cleary who will have a lot of work with the ball this season. We definitly need to play a third seamer, not sure but I would say starting with Putland maybe would be an idea.
What do people think of that.

The problem with the backs is the batting. You would need Marshall, Garner, Holding and Walsh* to bowl with the current SA batting line up. The poor bowlers will be in the field all season long and therin lies the problem.

* - the starting four pacemen during the 1984/85 series in Australia. OUCH. All out for 76 in Perth!

Interesting to read yesterday that the decision to go back to the Sheffield Shield was not on any traditionalist or moralistic grounds
Simply that when Pura did not renew their naming rights the ACB couldn't find a replacement naming sponsor

(maybe this was only news to me)
Corporate sponsorship for sports is becoming more and more scarce - just ask the NBL
The downside of course is potentially less funds for the ACB which I guess will impact the lower levels first
