I don't understand how the ODI rankings can be so even, we dominated last years world cup but yet we always seem to be in the "dangerzone" of losing the number one ranking.
It doesn't really matter though, atleast we dominate in "real" cricket.

Without the World Cup the Aussies are only 13-13 since Feb 2007

At a guess I'd say it's due to a tight schedule, but I don't know for sure why we are only playing three Tests against South Africa and not four next summer.

I wouldn't be game enough to say it 100%, but I think I recall hearing at some point a few years ago that test series were eventually all going to be 3 tests aside from those series with greater historical significance (such as the Ashes).

Thats correct, but cant remember all the details, although England vs SA has been put in the same level as The Ashes.

Opportunity for Australia to reclaim top spot
Cricinfo staff
January 30, 2009
Australia may have lost their No.1 ranking in ODIs to South Africa after their 39-run defeat in Perth, but they have an opportunity to reclaim that position quickly when their five-match ODI series against New Zealand gets underway.
South Africa went ahead by a fraction of a point after winning the series 4-1, but a victory in the first ODI against New Zealand in Perth, on Sunday, will be enough to push Australia to the top. Australia are still the top Test team, enjoying a five-point lead over South Africa despite losing the Test series 2-1 this summer. WELL THAT DIDNT HAPPEN
South Africa are back at the top for the first time since April 2008 and held the position for a brief period. The gap between the top three sides is steadily narrowing, with India also in the picture. They are currently five points behind South Africa and Australia in the ODI rankings and a series victory against Sri Lanka will push them further towards the top.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe have also made progress, moving up one place to tenth after winning the opening two matches of the five-ODI series in Kenya.
South Africa 125
Australia 125
India 120
New Zealand 113
Pakistan 111
England 108
Sri Lanka 106
West Indies 91
Bangladesh 46
Zimbabwe 20
Ireland 19
Kenya 1

Graeme Swann has crowned a remarkable year, in which he has taken 54 wickets in 12 games, by rocketing to No.3 in the world rankings, ahead of Muttiah Muralitharan.
His man-of-the-match performance at Kingsmead, where he completed match-figures of 9 for 164, earned him an eight-place jump to the number-three spot, the highest of any England bowler since Steve Harmison was crowned No.1 in August 2004.

It's amazing how we went from dominant leaders in the Test rankings to fourth in one year. I suppose losing to India in India, South Africa here and England in England makes a huge difference, despite the last two were 2-1 defeats.
