Redbacks squad for 08/09

Postby westcoastpanther » Fri Jun 06, 2008 1:56 pm

Redbacks squad 2008-09 announced
06/06/2008

“Professional cricket demands natural talent, hard work and a level of maturity that can only come with age and experience, said coach, Mark Sorell.

“We have great faith in our talented young players and we have an obligation to to nurture and develop them so they have every chance of success. And we have an obligation to the cricket community to build a competitive state side.

“It is no coincidence that the average age of players currently on the Cricket Australia contract list is 29 and that successful state sides such as Victoria dominate the domestic competition with squads with similar age profiles.

“With the retirement of Blewett, Lehmann, Elliott and Gillespie last season the average age of the Redbacks squad lowered to 24.

“I have been looking for players in 27 to 30+ age group - it is about improving our competitiveness on the field and mentoring our young players off the field.

“With this year’s recruits, we have delivered - our young and extremely talented players will be better supported and our squad will be better positioned to field a competitive and experienced team.”

The following 18 players are contracted to the Redbacks in 2008-09:

Bailey, Cullen
Borgas, Cameron

Suprised to see that Delmont is still on a rookie contract. I thought he might have been upgraded - maybe not enough room due to the inclusions of Younis and Klinger?

That's correct! You have to be rated in the first place, to then in turn be overrated....

No one on that list, bar Tait and possibly Manou are rated at all!

SACA should have never let Harris go and offered him whatever he wanted.

Bit harsh leaving Fergs out GWW. Here are his scores playing for Netherfield in England at the moment.

17,10,5,83,28*,80,57,137*,27. Bit rusty at first but the 137 conversion is pleasing to see, hopefully this year he can turn more of his 80's into big ones.

Also taken 16 wickets as the first change bowler...

Netherfield is that roughly equivalent to District cricket, i presume its a step down from County cricket, although i stand corrected there.

I think with Cosgrove supposedly being a chance of getting fit (if he's continuing on with his fitness program), and Khan coming in, it may mean that there may be one position available between Ferguson and Borgas. Ferguson is frustrating because he gets starts but doesn't go on. I guess i'm holding out hope that Borgas will step up next season, although i'd say the reality is that its probably a 50/50 as to which out of the 2 batsmen deserves a chance in the 11, given that they may both struggle to get a gig in the side top 6.

Yeah i'd agree there, looks better than our 07/08 squad. If Khan can average 45/50 is will decrease the pressure on the middle order and hopefully we'll be less susceptible to those disastrous batting collapses of the last 5 or 6 years.

yeah seems to be a good standard the club 1st XI have made the national knockout finals which is televised plus played against fringe county players.

Like the scorecard from his knock of 137. batting first drop the opener gets a donut and then the fielding side does not take a wicket for the rest of the innings
