WTF

apart from being closer to South Africa why would they give them a SA test over Adelaide or even Brisbane?
Perth have been terrible crowd pullers* for years and they reward them?
SOUTH Australians should plan for a return to the pre-Christmas Test at Adelaide Oval when Cricket Australia announces its international schedule for the 2008-09 season today.
CA is tipped to include Adelaide Oval Test and one-day games between Australia and New Zealand during December.
Adelaide enjoyed a one-off restoration of its much-loved Australia Day weekend Test which featured India in January.
It is understood the Black Caps will play two Tests in Brisbane and Adelaide while Perth, Melbourne and Sydney host "glamour" Tests against South Africa,.
The SCG New Year's Test will start on January 3 to allow greater recovery time following the blue-chip Boxing Day clash.
The popular Proteas' only appearance in the City of Churches shapes as an Australia Day 50-over blockbuster.
Ricky Ponting's side visits South Africa for three Tests, two Twenty20 games and five one-dayers next February/March.
Inspired India won the tri-series competition against Australia and Sri Lanka last season.
CA resolved to shelve the Kerry Packer concept after 30 years as part of an overhaul of the Australia international season.
CA has indicated it favours five-game, head-to-head 50-over contests which eliminates neutral games labelled as "boring" by critics.
The South Australian Cricket Association had initially been happy to host the low-profile Kiwis before the postponement of its $90 million western grandstand redevelopment.
Adelaide Oval was overlooked for three scheduled Twenty20 games which will almost certainly be sell-outs in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

Not bloody happy. We get the might of NZ instead of the South Africans? Brisbane definately get bad crowds to test matches though.

Adelaide changed to the second test match of the calandar a couple of years ago as it gives Ch 9 more time to move the OB equipment around the country - Bris, Adel, Perth, Mel Syd is more efficient than Bris then a long haul to Perth then back to Adel.
Well at least that is my understanding of the official reason - you're right Dutchy we would brain tehm when it comes to crowd pullers*

Don't know about that.
Last summer the test in Brisbane was hampered by bad weather, plus a lacklustre opponent and so the crowds were down.
I reckon the first 4 days were sold out in the Ashes series the year before.

what is the most annoying part is that SA were getting some of the best crowds to there domestic twenty20 matches, and james southerlend said that international t20 would move around the country. But Melbourne, brisbane and sydney are all getting there second before adelaide oval gets there first!!!!

As for us playing the kiwis!! i think you will find that even though the calender was put out today most of the fixtures would have been done along time ago propably before they stopped the construction of the new members stand. so why send South Africa there when you can only fit 18 thousend

I think the joker has it right. Would imagine this decision would have been made when expecting Adelaide Oval to be in the midst of renovations. Yes, they could have changed it, but in lots of ways I think the SACA deserve to get the 2nd best with all the stuffing around that's gone on with the redevelopment.

not sure I get your reasoning with the OB equipment Tassie, they still have to go to each city
Would it have anything to do with being close to SA? as Aus always play SA in Union in Perth...

IIRC the reason given for the change in the schedule (Bris, Per, Adel) to (Bris, Adel, per) about 6 yars ago was that it is easier for Ch 9 with the increase in back to back test matches to have Adel as the 2nd test match and then go onto Perth.
I'm not saying I believe it but for quite some time now we have been either after Bris or Hobart in test matches. So it is no surprise really. He we could like Tassie no tests or O/D games at all this season.

It's not geography because it's not exactly a half hour trip. It's demographic. I think there are a lot of Saffies in Perth. There's also a lot of Saffies in Brisbane..couldn't believe how often I run into em up here. So I'm not sure that's the reason. Joker's seems more likely. As for Brisbane crowds Max,
every city drew crowds to the Ashes series. Crowds for Test cricket have been down for years at the Gabba. I'll take my lad to see us belt the Kiwis though.

Huge S.Africian population in WA this was always a gimme decision . Did we get an Indian Test last year ? Pretty sure we did and a potential limited overs final. Not sure we have a god given right to the test we want to choose.

When are we going to give South African Cricket the respect it deserves by giving them at the very least a four test series? And scheduling a 20/20 against a New Zealand side will be like watching Australia play the Warriors. Piss off the 20/20 and play real cricket. If you worried about the coin put on less ODI's. Watch the 20/20 crowds peak this summer, then decline steadily after that. Then stand by for 15/15. WHAT A JOKE.

I think you'll find we back up the 3 match Test series against SAf with another one over in SAf, possibly in March.

i wouldnt be so sure about that New zealand always leave the best cricket for the Aussies and any twenty20 team with Brendon Mccullam. Jacob Oram Daniel Vettori and Taylor are going to be a good side

I would like to know how they choose which states get the tour matches. So often touring teams play on grounds against various states that they don't play the Test match on. And Hobart should have been the third Test match against New Zealand.

We were very lucky to get the Indian test last season for mine after the wonderful series they had the last time they were here.
