AUSTRALIA has been left in a spin-bowling crisis with the shock retirement of Brad Hogg from international cricket.

Hogg will announce his retirement at a press conference in Melbourne later this afternoon.

The 37-year-old left-arm spinner told senior Cricket Australia officials of his decision at the Allan Border Medal on Tuesday night.

Hogg played seven Test matches and 121 one-day games for Australia. He will finish after the finals of the Commonwealth Bank series, starting in Sydney on Sunday.


Australia is now left without a recognised Test spin bowler because of doubts over Stuart MacGill's comeback from hand surgery late last year.


It is unclear whether Hogg will be tempted to play in the rebel ICL tournament in India.

Bryce McGain would be a monty to get a call up for the Pakistan tour now!

Well all i can say is Didn't see that coming at all. Always thought Hogg would be the kind of guy to hang around until someone kicks him out.

Bryce has had a brilliant year in state cricket.

a little bit sudden but not surprising given the increased media attention on his performances this season.

If Bradley does join the 20/20 comps then perhaps this is a huge wake up call to administrators who are refusing to negotiate a pay rise for players. Loose the older ones to Indian pay packets and loose the younger ones to AFL pay packets.

For mine, Dizzy prob looks the odd one out

I'm not sure if he is the odd one out Hondo - given his body. Sure he hadn't had the huge injury problems of the past - but those times would have taken their toll.

Bevan the only Australian batsman of the past 20 years to play more than one test and not score a century.

I'd probably have Blewett ahead of Maher in the side too.

I'm sorry, but would I be the only one extremely pi$$ed to see Bryce McGain in the national SQUAD, whether or not he played...
Either blood the youngsters (i.e. Cullen, Doherty, Hauritz), or don't bother with a front line spinner, and use M Clarke or Symonds/D Hussey (which ever one plays).

Shouldn't the best side be picked regardless of age. McGain is the best spin bowler in the country (apart from MacGill) and as such should most definitely be picked ahead of the others you mention. As an aside if Hauritz ever plays for Australia again it is a real worry. The guy is absolutely awful.
