Monkey Business

Postby Andy #24 » Mon Jan 07, 2008 9:38 am

Have the Aussies bitten off more than they can chew with the racism allegations. It seems evident that the Australian team has made offensive remarks to other teams but cries foul when it happens to them. I understand that there is no place for racism but it is not the only way to overstep the mark. We should be prepared to temper our own behaviour now as we can't just pick and choose what we think unnacceptabley offensive.

3 matches is a bit harsh. Does anyone believe the kid is racist? He was probably overwhelmed and retorted to Symonds with the first thing he knew could piss him off. This kind of punishment will not change any underlying beliefs that spawn racism, nor is there any need for a deterrent. I can't see these kind of remarks becoming prevelant and the offenders claiming a precedent of an absence of punishment.

Show some maturity boys, shake hands and get over it.

Does anyone believe Darren Lehmann is racist?
Yes, the Aussies should be able to take it when people fight back verbally.
But racial insults are another thing entirely. The fact is, if Ricky Ponting had called someone a 'monkey', he would have received the same treatment as Singh.
This is not a clash of cultures - there should be no racism on the field.

I also wonder what Steve Bucknor's thoughts on Singh calling Symonds a monkey are....

Or they could all show even more maturity and not use racist sledges on the cricket field. The 'what goes on the field stays on the field' mentality does not reflect the trends of modern society. Times and people change..those who can't get suspended. A bit harsh perhaps but the guy has been warned before.

Racism is not acceptable. End of story.

I wasn't justifying what he said, just pointing out that the Australians may need to modify their own behaviour before they start throwing stones. Kumble's comment that only one team was playing within the spirit of the game obviously shows that he thinks their behaviour is unnacceptable. Simply because we may not be able to put a label like racism on what they have said doesn't make it any better.

Funny that India are promoting a tough new exterior, which includes a more antagonistic vocal approach - allowing Harby to sledge as he does, allowing Sreesanth to go off as well in the past series, but still, Australia are the bad guys in all of this.....

I thought the Indian contingent were like school kids - making excuses and pointing fingers at everyone but themselves. Quite childish.

Take the punishment that is dished out and move on.

I think you can drop the use of the word allegedly there stumps... Found guilty and served the time - he said it. Still doesn't make him a racist.

Not making light of that incident (or racism in general) but being called black, when you are, is the offensive part? What about being called a c*&t?

It's difficult to put oneself in the shoes of someone being racially vilified, given I am white and live in a majority white society - it surely must get tiresome, no matter the word used. It's the intent behind it that is offensive.

A racist would show a pattern of behaviour that was racist, not one isolated comment in a career that has exposed him to all walks of life over a long period of time. Do you disagree?

Smac- i respect that opinion i honestly do and i see what your saying. . I do slightly disagree however, , in my opinion, by saying 1 racist comment , it just means you are clever enough to censor yourself every other time youve been thinking those same thoughts-

The issue I have here is what defines racism. To my knowledge colour wasn't brought up in the comments Harbhajan made to Symonds, however it is the term 'monkey' that has been seen to be a racist remark. What if Harbhajan called Ponting a bunny? Where do you draw the line?

I think a lot of it stems from the European/English soccer leagues where "monkey" was a common taunt/chant used by opposition fans about african players.
