TOP 12 BATSMAN IN THE PURA CUP

Postby mal » Thu Nov 22, 2007 1:13 pm

Pura Cup cricket is most probably the toughest domestic cricket comp in the world.
Played over 4 days most contests are hard fought.
However is there a lack of distinct batting depth as we may have had in year 2000 ?
Here are the leading averages for players who have scored 1000+ runs in the P/Cup
These are players currently not in the Australian eleven.

QLD
48-02 WATSON
39-58 MAHER
35-96 PERREN

NSW
53-49 KATICH
42-81 THORNLEY
41-40 HADDIN

VIC
55-55 HUSSEY
48-81 HODGE
39-96 WHITE

TAS
44-77 DI VENUTO
39-39 BIRT
37-77 MARSH

SA
54-70 BOOF
47-39 ELLIOTT
35-30 FERGUSON

WA
50-73 LANGER
47-92 ROGERS
38-20 RONCHI
60-10 POMERSBACH[but in 601 runs only]

TEST TEAM
Bear in mind only HAYDEN is likely to retire in the short term
The other batsmen if they hold form will play at least 2 more seasons

REPLACEMENTS
Look at the above list, eliminate all the players 30+ and look 'watson' offer
The cupboard is bear.

PS David HUSSEY averages 55-55 is he a Jamie Siddons should have played
50 test matches for Australia ?

David Hussey surely would get the next crack if there was a injury ?

Would like to see him get a crack myself.

Think the bowling depth in Australian cricket is more of a concern than batting IMHO.

I reckon the faster bowling is OK, but nothing special in the spin department.

Bracken
Hughefnerhaus
Tait

Genuine contenders for a test spot

Bollinger
Nicholson
Gillespie
Magoffin
Dorey
Denton
Wright

Excellent domestic players

Spin?

Cullen...probably the best at the moment
Hogg - Don't reckon they'll pick him ever if fruit loops McGill on one knee gets a gig
Voges - Not too bad
Heal - As above but no world beater
O'Keefee - VERY raw
Warner - Very versatile Blues bowler but hasn't gotten a gig as yet
Casson - Hmmmmm
Hauritz - Not quite
Krejza - See Hauritz
Doherty - Cripes see Krejza!
White - Er, no

A bigger problem might be the wickets. It's almost coast to coast roads. It's pretty funny though, on one hand on this site we are seeing threads that say 'are we too good' and on the other we have got these 'the cupboard is bare' type of thread.

There's plenty of talent in the domestic game but there is an undeniable changing of the guard going on at the moment.

Good post REB, agree with you wholey on the fast bowling side. There is no doubt that the next 2-3 years we will see a massive change in the Australian side.

I would have thought Cullen Bailey might have got a mention in your list of spinners. OK, he isn't in the Redbacks side currently - but surely in each of the other states bar maybe WA, he would be a walk-up first choice spinner?
He is 22(?) and already shown glimpses of what he could become, maybe it might be time to fast track a guy like this similar to Warne? Their circumstances are strikingly similar, if of course you leave out all the controversey and baggage that followed Warnie even in his early years...

Interested to know everyones thoughts. Do they drop MacGill for Hogg, or do they do what they did 15 years ago with Warne and debut Bailey??

I notice Noffke is a noticeable omission from above. Surely he would be close to next cab off the rank? He'd be up there with Tait, Hilfenhaus & Bracken. Not forgetting he can bat too. Surely he would be ahead of Watson as an allrounder now as well. Let's hope he gets over his hammy injury.

Hodge & Katich have been tried and tested. When they are hot they are as good as anyone but when they are not......well we all saw Hodge in India. Time to blood someone else. I'd love to see David Hussey get an oppurtunity at test level.
