Thanks DW, I didn't get it until you asked what it meant!

The proposed stands look good, prevents the place from becoming a "stadium" and remains an "oval".

I like it and from a student in the Construction field perspective I am interested in how they are going to conserve the heritage aspect of the orginal stands but yet still deliver a modern spectator facility.

For me, thats the most important part. When you are over at Adelaide Oval 2 and look at the back of the stands, it is a beautiful piece of design work, looks great. While I dont really like the idea of spending a lot of money for what will be at best 6 days use each year, at the very least, the original 'shell' of the stands must remain.

Agree that the stands look good. About time SACA did something about providing their members with some value though. What they charge compared against what they deliver simply doesn't add up...

For all the revenue generated by the extra 'thousands' of members that were allowed in (what waiting list) when the members area was extended to include the Bradman Stand what benefits were passed on?

I'm in 2 minds, I like the look of these, but I love the feel and charachter of the existing stands.

Christ how did the residents of North Adelaide take that. Probably still up in arms about the skyline being ruined by the light towers.

Would prefer it if they tried to maintain some of the heritage look of the old stands.

Yep. Needs to be the red brick, not concrete like the other new stands.

I recall they did a proposed design for the stands a few years ago - it was different to that - the roof was the same as it is now. And I'd rather see it that way.

Me too. Something similar in looks to the Bradman Stand, but with more seating.

SOUTH Australian cricket fans could face a big squeeze in the 2008/2009 summer with Adelaide Oval's $70m western grandstand redevelopment slashing ground capacity.

The ambitious, innovative renovation of the western stands will affect capacity in the area which currently accommodates 8000 patrons.

SACA is in discussion with Adelaide City Council over broad plans to build two tiers of seating to the base of the existing stands. Capacity in the western stands would be augmented from 8000 to 13,000 with the ground able to accommodate 37,000 patrons.

SACA president Ian McLachlan said if all plans were approved, construction work would commence immediately following the International Rugby Sevens tournament on April 6 next year.

"The proposal is that we would start at 5.30pm the day the rugby sevens finish," McLachlan told members at the SACA annual general meeting.

"We would lose one cricket season and certainly a football season but be finished by September of the next year (2009). We would still continue to play first-class cricket and we think a Test match here using the Bradman Stand all the way around the back."

Melburnians were also forced to endure capacity restrictions when the MCG was significantly redeveloped in the lead-up to the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

SACA has secured $50m in state and federal government funding while it must provide the remaining $20m to complete the project it hopes will preserve Adelaide Oval's ability to attract top-quality events.

"We think this stand will go from 8000-11,000 with another 2000 places in bars and dining rooms," said McLachlan of the renovations which will include a 750-seat dining room, corporate facilities, revamped football changerooms and new catering facilities.

The challenge for SACA will be to keep costs at $70m.

"The difficulty is to match the money with the design but I think the internal designs are very useful and attractive," said McLachlan.

Australia hosts New Zealand for a two-Test series in November 2008 and South Africa later in December.

Usually Adelaide would be strongly positioned to command a Test fixture featuring the popular Proteas but diminished seating could mean the lower-profile Kiwis visit the City of Churches

I agree. I did the survey and made that very comment.

Any thruth to the rumour that it is over budget ($40 Mil was the rumour going around at the one-dayer last Tuesday) and behind schedule. May not be ready for the test this year.
