Dropped fourth ball by Carey in second dig. Absolute dolly too.
Facing Doggett and co on a flat Olympic oval pitch is a bit different to facing Bumrah in Perth too. Big ask for the kid

Australia need a massive rebuilding in the next few seasons, but only after the India test series
As Jimguru05 has mentioned The Sam facing a reasonable SA attack is nothing like facing the Indian attack

Despite his low score today I hope they go with Konstas at the top of the order this summer. Gives him 10 tests (India, Sri Lanka and West indies) to get ready for the ASHES
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Agree

We are seeing in all sports across the world, young blokes and rookies making the cut straight away for more often than ever before.

The youth of today are ready for professional sport far quicker than previous eras.

Sorry but this is test cricket.
You don't get gifted a cap on the back of two good scores against the same opposition on the same deck.
Someone said give him 10 tests and see how he goes.
Ok so he fails 20 times assuming we bat twice and makes less than 10 in every innings.
Couple of things, his partner would have all the pressure to score on him.
His confidence will be smashed.
Test caps come on the back of consistent good scores not just 2 in one game.

I think Marcus Harris is and should be the front runner for the vacant opening spot given his form and Bancroft's lack of runs so far. if McSweeney goes big again tomorrow and for Aus A, he'd have to be considered, even if he bats 1st drop instead of opening for SA. Likewise, if Konstas gets a couple more centuries in his next few innings, but I don't think what he did against SA is enough to have him ahead of Harris, Bancroft etc.

I think Harris is also the most aggressive of the batsmen above and that will count for something given Warner is being replaced.

Sadly Harris is probably the front runner.

I'm not saying he is in the same class or ever will get within a stratosphere of Steve Smith but a lot of similarities about how despite the numerous set backs at test level his had he just keeps going back to the shield and hitting runs. Cant knock the bloke for that.

If Konstas is the next Ponting like most experts have said why not get him straight in.
It didn’t hurt Ponting playing at an early age.
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

I tend to agree on the basis no one else is smashing the door down.

Harris is going ok but not absolutely setting the world on fire. If he could have tonned up against the NSW bowling line up this week then that would have had to have him first in.

Harris is poop and has proven it many times om the international stage, one half century in his last 19 digs.

I'd rather a kid score 12 than Harris' 19, Harris is in the Marcus North category, great domestic player but not quite the test player. Harris should've made the most of his opportunities, he should've cashed in against Sri Lanka and propelled his career from there.

And that's my argument, If there's noone else banging down the door pick youth, especially with an eye to next ASHES series give him a go so he can work out this test caper.

Harris is the next best performed and as others say he's the safe option and most likely

Next best option is arguably McSweeny ATM and 1st drop for SA is basically opening ;)

Bancroft is averaging 2.33 this season in 3 digs (17 balls) so he is ruling himself out. At least Renshaw has 45 runs in 3 digs in about 80 balls...

Well unless mcsweeney goes big next game then Trav unfortunately will open in a David Warner type role.
Konstas is a very close watch at this point.
If he continues good form then he will be a big chance to get in.

Could they go?
Khawaja
Laba
Smith
Head
Marsh
Webster

Im not sure making runs at no6 in Shield cricket is the best form.
IMO you have to be making them in the top4 in Shield to be considered for a top6 position in the Test team.

If they select an opener it may as well be Konstas, the others have proven over a long period of time theyre not up to it

Doesn't really look anything like what we're used of hey?

Laba has the technique to open and I've always though if you can bat at 3 you're potentially an opener anyway, it's probably the reason I'd shy Smith away from #3 nor would I risk Trav there.

I reckon if you moved Marsh up to 3 and the other two down one then it's how I'd roll if we aren't playing the kid, I'm unsure of the #6 spot though.

Personally I would like to see Carey open up, I think it's within his capabilities and it allows us to play an extra middle order batsman, apart from bowling that is our next strongest area of the game.

Agreed, i dont like Smith at 3 or Head at 4. Infact i dont like Smith in the team at all really but that isnt going to change, he has a spot until he retires, not sure he is worthy of it with his form over the last 3 to 4 years
If we could get away with Marsh at 3 that solves the issue, big if though.
