Yeah I honestly didn't know how he statistically fared in that regard but was more making an overall statement regarding the use of statistics.

Would be real interesting to compare those stats with a batter who had a very close average to his and see if there was any major differentials.

I think era to era is too hard to compare. Different pitches, different strong teams/weak teams, different philosophy on how the game is played and in many cases played under different rules.

If someone can average 40 in test cricket then they'd definitely get a look in.

We haven't dropped too many recently with an average of 40 - Khawaja potentially the only one.

But I agree the odd player is better/worse than their average would suggest - e.g. Junior, Voges.

Not just batting average but all the stats and numbers display and show us the result of all the variables that whufc mentioned and give the best indication to how good of a player they are.

Definitely, AE mentioned Mark Waugh's first class average, his FC record is very, very good and he would hypothetically walk into Australia's current test side.
I've heard it said a few times across the media, 40 is the new 50, especially from an Australian point of view.

Well there you go - Head doesn't average 40!!

Wade was probably a special case due to his form at the time, and in fairness some of that 29.8 was when he was playing as keeper, but Head was dropped a bit too early I reckon.

It's strange how the Australian selectors pick - and drop - blokes at the wrong time.

E.g. Head, Hughes, Khawaja and arguably Burns were dropped when they weren't doing that badly - yet they pick/recall some blokes when everyone can see they need some more time in Shield cricket - Hughes, Maddinson, Renshaw being a couple of examples amongst batsmen.

And then we have the Shaun Marsh cult.

My view point has nothing to do with the likes of Voges or Richards, I'm just talking about Khawaja only here.

Your point that what is there besides numbers is perfectly debunked by Voges test batting average. Accoring to the numbers (and what else is there?), Voges is the second best test batsman in history. It doesn't matter if you're talking about Khawaja or Dulip Doshi, if there is ever one sport that isn't just about the numbers it's cricket.

Success...what success? A talented player that managed to average 40 and who can't field or bowl? If Khawaja is selected then I expect diminishing returns and he won't be able to retain that average by the time he gets punted again. If he does gain genuine success and holds down a middle or top order spot I'll be happy as he has a green hat on his head.

Wade got a gig as he has the 'gritty' label attached to him while Usi and Head coughed up too many soft outs. Then Wade started doing it so might as well bring back Trav who has the better range of strokes.

I don't just looking at batting average, with Voges you only have to at his season breakdown (2015, 2015/16, 2016 and 2016/17) aswell as his record breakdown against each country that he played against to see that he was just a flash in the pan test batsman.

If cricket isn't just about all the numbers we can find to analyse it then what else do you think is it about and how else do you personally determine whether a player is playing well and good enough to be in the team or not?

BTW thanks Redbacks you utter spuds. Now everyone is talking up Usman 'soft ******* dissmissal' Khawaja as the answer to our top order problems. FMD he's a marshmellow. A more frustrating batsman you will not find currently playing in Australia.

You probably want to thank the umpires for that; long before he got to 174 he did glove it behind on two separate occasions, but each time not out was decided.

I wonder how many more chances Warner will get before he's dropped from the Test side. Whether it be 20/20, 50 over's or 5 day format. When you're out of form you're out of form. He's a spud and should be dropped. Well past his best and can't rely on his "Stats and averages' to automatically pick him. Time to find the time to back someone else.
