95% Agree, Pontings' shot maybe could be excused as he had made 48 and by that stage you're generally seeing the ball well enough to hit those to the fence BUT as for the other shots, particularly Clarkes', were simply pathetic. For a professional cricketer as Clarke is, to play a shot like that, to a ball like that so early in his innings, well, his mind must have been off with the fairies.
Mr Reliable Hussey, well on the way to aother Ton if he doesn't run out of partners.
Aust 5/208
Huss 47*
Hadd 10*

Honours so far to Sri Lanka bcos this is a 400+ 1st innings pitch.

Based on the series so far i would suggest that we have the ascendancy IMO especially considering we did the Richie special and were 2/22. 2 set batsmen including clearly the batter of the series Mr Cricket. A first dig score of 350 would put us in a very commanding position. I cant help but be impressed with the grit, determination, technique and form of SOS. Looks the part. Great work boys :D (not you Phill)

cant argue with that....3 of the shots that fell to wickets were poor batting too so you can argue it more as well...i reckon dilshan is an absolute clown of a captain too. lets hope we kick on and then have them 5 fer at stumps

Geez for every good Clarke innings he does play some real school boy shots to get out in between.

You can see if his out of form and is getting out to shots like that on Australian soil the media is going to have a field day on him.

I hope he can make a success of it, so far his captaincy on field has been brilliant but playing shots like that isnt going to make him popular to the Aussie public.

Have to disagree with most of youse
Ive got no prob with the Australian batters playing thier shots
Thats how the team played a few years ago when it dominated
Simple logic, attacking batting, try and eliminate the draw, and outperform the opposition
If you believe you are a better team, than you should adhere to this tactic

The current team aint as good
But they are a better team than SL
So why not attack and try and win as often as possible

None of the shots that Watson, Ponting or Clarke got out to were outlandish shots
They have played similar shots most of their careers

Mal,
One of the reasons Australia were and stayed on top for so long was bcos they played aggressive cricket and shots like the ones we're talking about.

BUT.....

Back then Aust WERE on top and had a better team and had a bloke called Gilchrist to get them out of the shit if the top order failed to shots like that.

When you're NOT on top but down about 5th in the rankings and have been struggling to beat anyone in Test cricket in recent years, the players have to get back to basics and do the hard yards before they can start playing like millionaires again.

Just look at the West Indies, they've played like millionaires all for their entire history but apart from when they had an exceptionally talented team as they did back in the 80s, they have failed miserably and Australia will do the same if they continue to play shots like that when they come up against Sth Africa & England again.
