SMAC - I think WCP had every right to type what he did.
That is one of the most pi$$ weak shield teams I have ever seen.

O ' Brien at 5 is 47 matches with 1 100's and 7 50's at an average of 26.89.
Cool if he's a youngster but he's had 10 years at shield level .
Not 1 batsman in that side averages over 40.
24 1st class tons combined in that 11, great if it's a young side but most of them are from mature interstate recruits who hit those 100's for other states.

In the bowling side.....

O'Brien 47 matches 51 wickets @ 52.26 - poor
George 27 matches 93 wickets - terrific record
Christian 26 matches 69 wickets @ 35.02 - pretty good for an allrounder
Cassell 9 matches in 9 years 23 wickets @ 31.65
Haberfield 11 matches 27 wickets @ 39.96

Please tell me how WCP or other people who follow shield cricket in this state are meant to be positive about an ageing team with a heap of imports and average 1st class records.

I don't mind playing with 5 batsmen if we have Christian, Manou and O'Brien at 6,7 and 8. Manou now is the equal of most number 7 bats while O'Brien is a good number 8 so we make up some of those runs lost by having a weak number 6. But to bat Christian and O'Brien at 5 and 6 puts a lot of pressure on Klinger. Especially with Harris only averaging 25 over his career as well.

But I can't find myself blaming the selectors. We just don't have batsmen coming through. We've tried a myriad of blokes who do ok at grade level but then fail miserably at first class level. I think the crux of the problem is it's simply too easy to succeed at grade level without working hard and so blokes come up totally unprepared. Cut the number of grade sides to 6 or 8 so we can get these guys more prepared to get the job done at the higher level.

Is it really any wonder that the only guys who seem to be able to make the step up are the ones from other states?

Totally agree

I remember back in the early 90's batsmen in grade cricket having 1000 plus run seasons and not being able to get a game (Fielke was one), when was the last time anyone made 1000 in grade cricket?
I think its simply that we dont have the talent at the moment, its all cyclical together with the loss of really good young talent to AFL

Not necessarily after positive, but constructive (such as your post) would be better than the 'turn on your own' bollocks that gets trotted out - particularly by someone who claims to be a supporter (the word itself implies being supportive, not destructive).

So how does J Borgas miss out for the completely out of Harris? Borgas in career best form. Harris has not made a run in the SS all year. Time to move him on

I believe that Harris deserves another chance, after his Bash campaign, but only give him a match or two...

CK, not quite career best, but close, 150 plus last two innings. But he was absolutely shafted a few years ago after one game of the season, his passport must have been stamped "never again", pity because he would be the rock at the top that we miss.

Good inroads being made by the bowlers WA 4/117.
Clean up the tail and hopefully more than 1 batter stands up and we take the points.
For every one I miss I am closer to a hole in one.

Settle down REB, all i was trying to say is that the general population (not me and most of us on here) wouldn't even know the game was on. It is good to see and hear about good performances in the shield but the coverage it gets is shocking. For a $30 million investment each year, one would think CA would do a better job of promoting it to the masses.

The bowlers I thought were going ok. I guess the other part is how are they getting their runs and wickets? I haven't seen them in action at all so can't comment, but sometimes you can get a lot of wickets or runs at a lower level but not in a fashion that would work at a higher level. Especially when those runs might be against the 50th best bowler in the state or the wickets might be the 100th best bat in the comp.

The batting is diabolical though. Anyone actually have any faith that anyone but Klinger would make 100? 7,8 and 9 always looked a good chance to make as many as 4,5 and 6. Here are some ugly stats, so please anyone not feeling too well look away

29.76
29.30
(37.21)
41.00
27.28
26.81
24.72

Yep, you guessed it, that's the average 1-7 of the SA batting lineup. Klinger in brackets because his overall average of 37.21 doesn't do justice to his average for SA of 54.8. Blizzard at 41 is ok, but 5 of the top 7 of a first class Australian side average under 30.
