The rain saved the Saffer pricks 8)
Hilf out and Starc in for next game.
Not sure if Watto will be ready but he should come straight back in

Four of Michael Clarke's six captaincy hundreds exceed 150, so he's really settling into a big score when he gets going.
Scores including: 151 v South Africa, 329* and 210 v India and now the 259* v South Africa again.

Get him out early, or settle in for a few days in the field.

A great comeback by Australia after staring down the barrel of an embarrassing defeat earlier in the game. =D>

The Centrebet market has the series pretty evenly balanced:

Australia $2.80

Drawn Series $3.30

South Africa $2.35

Don't forget that they played this test match with ten men and no spin option. Australia with a moral victory but I don't think we smashed them here. Like Starc for Hilf though.

I reckon you're right.
Also the rain came when Saffer was well on top. They were 2/200 odd at the start of day 2. Probably if time is not a problem they'd dig in for most of two days and score in excess of 500. If their bowling attack is also at full strength they may well capitalise if they get us 3/40 or so.
As it turned out the Aussies really grunted it out, and may have done so against a full strength Saffer attack anyway.
Adelaide will be a different test for us.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

South Africa should not be disappointed
Most touring teams are usually 0-1 down after the Gabba Tests
In racing terms , South Africa will be better for the run

IF is an intangible word
But what IF Michael Clarke was out cheap and AU ends up being about 4/50
I reckon SA would have romped in

How can people say South Africa were not at full strength bowling wise? JP was only ever going to be a part time option and Smith was banking on his 4 quicks getting 20 Aussie wickets.

Vernon played his worst ever Test match of his career so far.

When Clarke and Cowan came together the South Africans went missing like they always do.

This is a crock of shit because Horses don't have to worry about pyschological advantage. The Saffers surrended this mental initiative when their run rate died in the ar5e during the middle session on day three. Instead of trying to make something happen the scoring dried up under pressure and they didn't look like trying to win the game after that.

After four sessions I was a worried fan as I thought 'these blokes are number one and they are all over us'. By the end of day three I was thinking 'Smith lacks belief'. If I sensed that, you can beat your bottom gold coin that Pup and Arthurs did too. Remember how England batted us out of that Gabba test a few years ago and maintained that mental edge? South Africa didn't do that and all that 'the run' might have achieved is a dimishing of the aura they had started to build up around themselves after beating England and being 3/333 in Australia.

Agree Saffies gave up on the game way to early!!!!

But mental edges and stuff are well and truly overrated.

The Indian batsmen had a 'huge' mental edge over our bowlers last summer due to the trillions of runs they hit the tour before.

People always go on about England gained the mental edge in the GABBA test.

Did anyone stop and think it wasn't so much a mental edge more they played themselves into superb form!!

Mental edges and so forth are hyped up for the media to fill column space

Bullcrap.

"I always felt that my greatest asset was not my physical ability, it was my mental ability." ~ Bruce Jenner

"Mental will is a muscle that needs exercise, just like muscles of the body." ~ Lynn Jennings

"The ideal attitude is to be physically loose and mentally tight." ~ Arthur Ashe

Mental edges are very real, especially in cricket. Particularly Test cricket.

Mentality is a huge part of any competitive sport and you'd be a pretty ignorant sports fan to think it is not.

Do u really think the Saffies are sitting there going oh no oh no we can't bowl the Aussies out, they are professionals and have played enough cricket to know no matter who the batsmen are it only ever takes one ball.

Have u ever tried less or not wanted to play because your opponent was to good.

Do u think when pattinson is exactly letting the ball go Graeme smith is thinking about anything other than seeing the ball.

A captain and his decisions while fielding could be effected!

It makes me laugh everyone goes on about the callihan/Warne battle and how he had it mentality over him. Has anyone thought just maybe that Warne was simply to good for him. If I faced Warne he wouldn't have a mental edge he would simply just be light years to good for me to face.

Shit the Saffies use to have psychologists etc etc travel with them did they improve NO

Steve Waugh called it mental disintegration.

Have you ever been subjected to a sledge that makes you go 'I will show them' next ball try to smash it through cover for 4 only to nick it to the keeper? Doesn't matter what level of cricket you play it is always going to happen.

REALLY!!! do you honestly listen to fielders when they say he needs to score runs ummm der off course I do I'm batting thats what batsmen are meant to do, if I then play a bad shot its because of what I was attempting to do not because a bloke says his batting to slow.

I would love to play against you if that's all it takes to make you play and shot

Eg one day game I'm batting we need nine an over a fielder yells out he needs to get a move on his batting slow i then get out playing a bad shot, it's not because what the fielder said its because we needed nine an over I had to get a wriggle on
