I think they would pull 5 names out of a hat before they would pick Hughes again this summer. If Watson and Marsh are missing then Ponting can step back into number 3 as an emergecy measure. When you have injuries you have to roll with thr punches. Id like to see Christian get his chance soon.
In between signatures .....

Ricky Thomas Ponting? I hear he used to make a living batting at three.

One of our best ever. Not sure if he is the solution now though. Im sure he wouldnt knock back the opportunity

Last seven innings has contained four half centuries. Needs a hundred, but re-gaining consistency... That's what we need at number 3.

I mean two solid openers wouldn't hurt either...

How did Hilfy bowl today??

Actually we would probably be worse off because i wouldnt have had Hilfy in side.
I honestly dont know what to do with the batting lineup, seems like we have tried most things.
Still would have liked to stick with Khawaja for a little longer

BTW which part dont you agree with?

The statement you made suggesting that Ponting would struggle batting at No 3   and the Hilfy stance you took earlier in the week, and the conviction in which you endorse Dan Christian over anyone else in the current Australian line up. How many more unproven players do you want in the team? We're actually on top in this match believe it or not. Wheres all your tripe about Hussey tonight?

I'll tell you now, anyone who plays with his current technique will not represent this country again wearing white pants, that's a strong tip....

I'm being harsh Jim05 and just stirring. I agree with most things you post and the batting line is a big concern i totally agree. Not the experienced players IMHO, but the young blokes and thier inconsistency.

Whats the answer Donkey?
We cant keep collapsing.
I really felt for the bowlers today, they copped a hammering last night and everyone said India would make 400+, the bowlers came out today and showed real guts and dragged us into a good position then they have to sit there and watch us be 4 for stuff all inside an hour. Now the bowlers will be expected to pull us out of the shit again tomorrow

I think back to our most successful era, and players like Hayden, Katich, Langer, Lehmann, Hussey etc were forced to compile 1000s of runs at domestic level on a consistent basis before they were given a spot. While the selectors took a punt occasionally on young guns that clearly showed freakish promise ala Ponting and Clarke. It seems in the past few years, the selectors have decided that rather than give opportunities to guys that have performed for years at domestic level (OK maybe our talent pool is a little average at present) they're happy to select 4 or 5 raw younger players that clearly lack the ability to concentrate for long periods in the middle. Personally Cowan an Khuwaja are the two that show the most cricketing-smarts as they are willing to see out the though periods and dig deep. Admittedly Khuwaja shot in the last innings of his last Test was a big lapse and a terrible choice of shot, but I think he shows the most. Yes guys like Warner are exciting and we need a guy like this at the top, but if we're looking for consistency he's not going to give it to us IMHO. Having said that I think he should be in the current team giving the absence of Watson. To me Marsh is a concern, he has always seemed nonchalent with his batting and that concerns me, he needs to value his wicket more. I'd stick with Ponting and Huss for a while until we settle these younger blokes in the team. I think if Haddin is coached properly he must stay.
Who knows, just some of my thoughts.

I think we need to lead by 285 to win this game. I really hope Hussey gets a ton tomorrow.

Haddin needs to stop trying to be Gilchrist.

Well said swap. Your a very smart thinker. One would think maybe even some coaching ability maybe. :) you should coach a footy team with that thinking.

Dan Christian will play as many tests as Tony Dodemaide.
A bits and pieces player.
I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad recommendation...

I thought Dodemaide went ok.
How many tests did he end up with?
Seem to recall him playing about a dozen tests.
Think he got a 6 fa on debut against the Kiwis.
Probably was a bits and pieces player but played in an era where you had to work fairly hard to get a baggy green. He had been doing well at shield for years.

NEW KIDS IN TOWN
The last 3 series have produced some bowling talent
Philander
Bracewell
Yadav
Pattinson
Will be interesting to see which one kicks on after good starts to their careers
Theres no doubt that bowling conditions have helped all of them so far
The Test will be on flatter decks
Will any of this quartet take 300 Test wickets ?
Of the 4 the one with hardest task will be Yadav as he will have to bowl on Indian pitches

NATHAN LYON
I would not pick him for the rest of the series, only for his own good
He is good enough against all nations , except India
The greatest Australian Leg spinner of all time had little success against India,so how can we expect Lyon to
If Lyon can average about 40 against India in this series, he will get a pass mark

PONTING + HUSSEY
IF ever I wanted 2 guys to make 100s, it was yesterday
4/27 when they got together
115 partnership in those circumstances was exceptional
Perhaps one of the very best 100 partnerships Ive seen

THE MATCH
A lead if 230

Will be interesting to see how certain players perform
Will Hilfenhaus bat like a 20/20 idiot ?
Will the Australian quicks bowl short at Shewags body today instead of a diet of offside offerings ?
Will Tendulkar choke chasing a lowish total batting last ?
Will Lyon get a top order wicket ?
Will Dhoni, if needed improve his batting average of about 16 v AU on Australian pitches ?
Will Laxman be the 2nd innings savior against Australia again ?

WHO WILL WIN ?
AU 257
IN 6/258
Laxman 78 not out
