Shocking way to get out

I will never understand batsmen getting out this way. People are quick to get stuck into bowlers for bowling no-balls yet feel sorry for batters who are dismissed backing up too far.

Backing up is good cricket, overstepping is illegal. Cowan might have been going too far, but that's the risk you run. Given how rarely a non striker gets run out and how often a run is made by a foot I think it's a risk worth taking. Only thing Cowan can really be criticised for is holding the bat in the outside hand.

Ive long been an advocate of bringing back the mankad, why should the batter get a head start?

I'm only against it when the batsman is out of their crease before the bowler has even reached their delivery stride.

At any stage from the beginning of a bowler's run up until he begins his delivery stride a batsman can be run out. I think they even changed the law recently to make it that you can't complete your arm swing when trying to Mankad someone. Really they're just trying to stop the bowler faking out the non striker by law, everything else is up to the players.
