Clarke is in his prime, and with our slightly suspect batting needs to do this to show the opposition "we are coming at you" IMO.

Good in theory, it's probably in his head that 5 is his spot.

Understand what you're saying, but with Warner opening and no settled no 3 or 4, most times he is going to be coming in at an early 3-for. Watson/Cowan/Khawaja can most times create a solid, if unspectacular opening, and then you still have the talent of Warner coming in at 5.

I think Cowan and Watson should open, a left/ right combo is always harder to bowl to and the field has to move every time a single is scored, it's disruptive.
Number's 3 & 4 are an obvious concern, the only way I could see Warner gain consistency is to bat lower in the order like Gilly used to when the bowlers are a bit tired, he seems to need the hard new ball though.
There is no immediate solution though and whoever we bring in will probably fail a few times early and lose confidence because we all call for their heads and label them as duds.

Agree, there won't be overnight sensation, and which is why I reckon Khawaja was a bit stiff to be left out of the side this time last year.

Was interesting to hear some bloke on the cricket show say that he has heard selectors are very critical of Khawaja, they think he is a very one pace, one dimensial batter, they are also apparently very concerned by his lack of ability in the field.

Ps if the Aussies could find a keeper batsmen who is averaging 55 we would be going alright!

Cowan caught, pulls one to fielder in the deep.
Commentators been saying for 5 overs that Sth Africa shouldnt have 2 in the deep and that they dont understand why. Shows that the chalkie old commentators know very little about that modern game. Wish they would rotate some of the old with some new blood, sick of hearing them state the obvious and talk about themselves.

Cowan is obviously the 35-by-lunch type of opener for us, and not sure if Warner is the answer at the other end. As one of the nine commentators said the other day, even though Cowan and Warner haven't been batting badly themselves, they don't look like they have formed a "partnership". Perhaps Cowan/Watson would make a better partnership, LH/RH, Clarke 4, Warner 5. Maybe Khawja at 3?

Clarke wont move from 5 and why should he, averaging 100+ for the past 12 months there, maybe Warner at 6 & Hussey at 4, don't mess with what does actually work for us.

Disagree with you there L/M i believe australia needs Clarke at 3 now i know his form at 5 has been amazing at times but how many times over the last couple of seasons have australia gone from 1 fa to 2 fa in the blink of an eye?

SA- Amla, Eng- Trott, SL- Sangakara these guys have been the bench mark of cricket for the last 2 or 3 years (as has Clarke) but i just think the old school your best batsmen bats at 3 is what australia really needs at the moment.
you've gota keep on keep'n on .........

That's like how Quiney has more maidens than runs (12 vs 9).
