Apart from a few cameo innings he has been fairly inconsistent, he is definatly caught between playing like Dave Warner and playing like a traditional test opener.
No doubt he has bucket loads of talent, plus his a jet fielder and throw in his not the worse part time bowler.
The flashes of brillianance are remembered alot longer than the poor dismissals but are we willing to take one with the other.
Is he the answer at the top of the order?

So much respect from the Saffies!
F**k that is sad, being 29 I don't remember to many summers without that brilliant pull shot, exaggerated leave outside off, the fingers pointing slips catches.
Summers will slightly be missing something now his gone but I'm sure I will be talking abouth him for years to come.
Thanks Punter!

Brisbane 4 & DNB
Adelaide 119 & 41
Perth 13 & 29
Test average of 44 - This summer - 41.2
I think any opener who can average 40+ is worthy of having around the place, but its how he goes about it that worries me. Geoff Marsh averaging 40 meant ( if we batted first in the Test ) he was out closer to tea than lunch, if Warner is out for 40 ( and we batted first ) its about an hour before lunch and that is not the job of an opener.
Sadly, with out very thin top order stocks around the country ( and Cowan yet to really establish himself ) I see Warner being our best option at the moment but long term he needs to soak up more of the new ball pressure, like he did on day 3 at the WACA, to be a genuine Test match opener. He'll belt the living suitcase out of average attacks and splutter like he has this summer against a quality one.
That's a great call what's more valuable as an opener from a team aspect.
A 35 off 90 balls which protects the middle order from the new ball for say an extra five or the extra fifteen runs from say a quickfire 50 off 55 balls

Cowan is obviously the 35-by-lunch type of opener for us, and not sure if Warner is the answer at the other end. As one of the nine commentators said the other day, even though Cowan and Warner haven't been batting badly themselves, they don't look like they have formed a "partnership". Perhaps Cowan/Watson would make a better partnership, LH/RH, Clarke 4, Warner 5. Maybe Khawja at 3?

Clarke wont move from 5 and why should he, averaging 100+ for the past 12 months there, maybe Warner at 6 & Hussey at 4, don't mess with what does actually work for us.

Clarke is in his prime, and with our slightly suspect batting needs to do this to show the opposition "we are coming at you" IMO.
