Katich is a hack and why is he still playing for Aus?

Hardly hack material. I think a move down the order would most suit him. He's not a notably aggressive player, but still boasts a reasonable ODI strike rate of 74.

Last night his innings, although a good one seemed lack lustre at the time, but looking back, the only reason it appeared that way is the way the other opener bats. With Gilly blasting 100+ off of less balls, anyone else is going to appear lack lustre in comparison. With any other opening partner, Katitch probably would look OK. Gilly is a freak, and we may never see another opener quite like him again.

Very glad you bought up these stats as they prove that he is no good - how many starts has he got and not gone on with it???? Any decent bat would have turned at least 3 of these into tons, especially opening. The guy just cant deliver - and he has NEVER won a game off his own bat like all good batsmen have.....if you give a guy long enough int he team he will make some scores like above against ordinary teams (all ordinary apart from England in above list)

He will be found out in the end....

Kat is not Matt but credit where credit is due, he batted well last night. It is hardly Katich's fault if the Lankans couldn't catch a cold in Geelong with a wet jumper on. Ah Kat, another born and bred Bluebagger legend!!

Well the selectors need to make the decision, either Katich is the man that will open with Gilly in the world cup or get Jacques ready for it now. It would appear that the selectors are taking the first option.

Katich has copped a lot of flack this season but he was clearly the best player for the winning side in the first final of the VB series at the Oval last night. His brilliant run out of the captain was sensational and to prove how much of a team player Kat is, he effected another brilliant run out with this time himself the victim.

Comment of the night from the commentators was 'Katich is not consistent in the way he calls when he strikes the ball. Sometimes he runs off and others he turns back and the top order players are having difficulty 'reading' Katich's calling style'. My mate Peter Blackman runs better between the wicket than does Katich so why do we have to put up with this guy? What is so special about this chap who's mediocre strike rate is more consistent than his calling between the wickets?? I have a two word solution for the problem...

MATT HAYDEN

..you can pi55 Marto off as well who is serving up more soft dismissals than Mark Waugh at his worst. I thought the Bowlers weren't too bad on the flat track, we only lost by 23 and that was with four run outs.

Yeah spot on REB, katich is too slow and dopey to hold his place long term.
I'd say the selectors are more likely to bring Jacques back in than Hayden though.

Martyn's 'flash in the pan' efforts earlier in the season had people suggesting he could get back in the test side.
Don't see that happening -too many lame dismissals since.

He might be a hack but if you look at his stats it will tell you this is the first time he failed for a few innings. Although he got a good ball, it wasnt a "rip-snorter" of a ball, just on a good line, he just managed to waddle into it.

I also thought that Martins dismissal was piss poor.

29 balls!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my god why oh why....

Postby Dutchy » Sat Mar 04, 2006 10:41 pm

Chasing 290 to win, the tourists lost 4-7 early with opener Katich forced to dig in and try to rebuild the innings, which eventually petered out to a record low for Australia against South Africa of 93 in 34.3 overs.

Dig in the left-hander did, scoring his first run in the 12th over, getting off the mark with an inside edge onto his pad for a single after facing 29 balls.

Katich, who strengthened his position in the team with a century in the third tri-series final against Sri Lanka at the Gabba last month, made 16 from 47 balls tonight, falling to Andre Nel to leave the visitors at 5-33 in the 19th over.

Though set a difficult task, it was nonetheless painful to watch.

Was Katich helping or hindering the cause?

"I don't know. I'll leave that for you guys to talk about," Smith said.

The winning captain tried to hide a half-smile when asked if his players had laughed at Katich's struggle to open his account.

"No I think that was for the crowd," Smith said.

Involved in another run out tonight, this time his own (have to admit the throw was really arsey)
Looked to be concentrating intensely, but still bloody slow (49 from 80)

Career is hanging by a thread.
