Equal on 32-tons with SR Waugh (from about 50-fewer innings).

He'll double that score by lunch tomorrow.

Punter needs 272 not out to average 60 in Test Cricket, if if he is dismissed he needs 332. Can he do it? :)

Against this popgun attack, I say he can.

Bad news for England ... Giles just turned a ball. Imagine what Warne will do on days 4 & 5 :)

Great stuff by the Aussies. I was confident leading into it but got a little bit nervy today, glad we won the toss and batted because the pitch is a pearler.

Ponting is a champion, fantastic captain's knock. Langer opened well and set the tone for the day. Hussey will score a ton i reckon, he didnt play last Ashes so he will want to make an impact this time.

Flintoff takes the new cherry at 3/333. Anderson to take it from the other end. No Harmison nor Hoggard with the 2nd new rock.

Anderson has been pretty bloody average today. Harmison the same, Hoggard ok i guess but not as good as he was in England.

Flintoff has bowled well.

I haven't seen much of Hamison or Hoggard today, but on today's showing Anderson is only just a bowler. He'd struggle to play regular Pura Cup.

Pieterson made a ball turn and bouce.......I would probably be a bit worried if i was england. And Giles ahead of Monty??? Not sure about this call. Already had some english people asking questions.

Good day for Australia.

For those of us who have never seen Panesar bowl, it's hard to think he's as good as they say if England rate an honest trundler like Giles ahead of him. Panesar should play in Adelaide ahead of Anderson who doesn't look up to it.

"Andrew Flintoff over-rated" is like the term "intellegent Port Power supporter" - an oxymoron

Great stuff by JL to set up the day, he has been waiting for this day sine September 2005. So glad the selectors stuck by him, he'll make every post a winner from here and then bow out on top with the ASHES back in safe keeping. He may be chronolgically 36 but physically he is 31-32. One of the hardest working sportspersons I've ever met, takes notihing for granted. Plenty more talented batsman then him in this country but none more determined and hard-working. #10 on our alltime list and 7000 test runs is testimony to his career.

Great stuff JL

Thought the POMS conceeded ground to us by going to 2 slips and a gully and no short leg within 30 mins, no desire to get wickets just contain....

Hoggard finding it hard to swing it here like he did in 2002-03, Harmison is here in body but not in spirit, I hope they keep persevering and trying to help him overcome his homesickness as he is a liability as long as here is here.

Giles has to play as Monty exposed Jones in the northern summer, fair dinkum a fence post is more effective than him. However I thought Giles pacevariations and bounce were good, but like most orthodox spinners he wont run through a side in Australian conditions.

Orthodox spinners in Australia rely on people getting out to them and are used primarily as run containers, see bruce YArdly as a case in point, got 46 wickets in 81-82 as the Paki's and Windies kept trying to smash him and they kept on getting out to him.

Anderson was great for two balls each over, two balls were OK and two were pies, he needs to get more consistant but the basics are their for him to do OK, if he can get his consistancy right, but it is a big IF.

Flintoff is a gun, they need to find another 7 of him and pronto!!!

One thing i have to hand to the POMS their attitude and commitment to their in and out cricket was still strong in the last over, - good commitment in the field shows that they are switched on for the series but are lacking class players like S Jones and Vaughen which will tell against them.

Ponting you are all class and your on-driving and pulling was sensational, his first three fours: pull, back foot cover drive and then on-drive were batsmanship of the highest order!

Was I the only one who saw Warney doing cart-wheels in the pavillion as Pieterson was getting spin and bounce on the first day????

POMS will struggle to bowl the aussies out twice in a test for most of the series, English conditions are suited to reverse swing and the POMS wont have that luxury this series

Great day by the aussies but win lose or draw I am still disapointed with the selectors lack of courage, once again went for the easy option to pick S Clarke

Very good point. I was at Lords last year and thought we had the thing wrapped-up after McGrath's heroics on day one... However, I can't see the conditions helping the English swing attack as much this series. As for the predicted three wickets in Flintoff's first over... not likely my friend
