Hhmmm. Gone are the days when you had to make a mountain of runs though. I reckon Warner only played 3 or 4 shield games at the top of the order before being picked.

We just dont seem to have guys churning out big runs at the moment at Shield level.
Hughes is the current leader and he is back in, Ferg and Doolan are up there but even both of them wont get to 1000 runs this season. Khawaja probably isnt in the top 10 run scorers for the season and yet he comes straight back in.
Batting is definately a concern at the moment in Australia

Should the selectors consider both D.Hussey and Haddin for India and beyond? D.Hussey in particular would be handy with his spin in India. Has had a poor Shield season so far but a career average of over 50 should give him some points.

I mentioned D Hussey when Quiney got the nod and was laughed at on this forum.

Why is that smac?

All we need is 12 months of good cricket from someone. Doesn't matter their age as can rebuild again after the Ashes.

Admittedly I don't get a chance to watch any First Class cricket, but an average of 53 over his career suggests he is quality. His spinners would also be handy in India. He would also know his game and has been around the international scene for ages now in the ODI format.

Anyway, never before since I've been following the game has there been so many openings in the Test side and so many different directions the selectors could take. Whilst there might not be enough time for everyone to make the Test squad for India, a really strong back end of the Shield season could see you book yourself a ticket to England. And this applies to any age IMO given we have lost Ponting and Mike Hussey in the last month. If someone can get 3 or 4 centuries in the last 4 or 5 games of Shield cricket that should get them a spot. I'm hoping it is Ferguson.

THE DAVE
Im a fan of David Hussey
Take him to India , YES, he is a spin dominator
Take him to England , NO , the British fast bowlers will be too much to handle at his age

Twelve months of D Hussey and where are we? Right here. No one over 30, preferably even 28. The Ashes were out of the question already, unless the Poms stuff it up somehow - why prolong the pain?

And MP should always be laughed at... have you seen that mo?

The Shield comp is for development. The Test team is for the best players at the time.

I love how every one says play the best side only

Ummm our last two test captains and arguably best batsmen this millennium were given a chance before they were in the best 6 bats in the country because of potential and the need to add youth.

Ponting and Clarke turned out alright,

We need to build a side our best eleven is NOT good enough

Now you agree with me I'm reconsidering my opinion!

But it's where I was coming from - will Hussey help us win the Ashes?

If Australia pick a couple of players that are currently in the test side, then we aren't going over trying to win.

Lol. First 2 picked ATM. Was thinking Johnson and Watson, jury out on Khwaja.

Just looking at the domestic fixture, and now that sideshow is nearly finished, and the shield cricket will ramp up again, there is a big opportunity for 1 or 2 batsmen to put their hands up. Will more than likely be 2 batting positions available for the first test in India.

Hope the selectors don't start picking an all rounder just for the sake of it. Interesting that the 2 most dominant sides in international cricket, never had an all rounder.

Correct Jim05. I like 6 batsman, 4 bowlers, and if the wicketkeeper can bat then great.
