I know things have changed over the years but I remember the days when a keeper was picked on their glovework and it didnt matter what they batted like, now we are seeing guys like DeVilliers that are rubbish with the gloves keeping at test level.

That's true, Jim. We all know Wade isn't the best 'keeper going around.

Despite one amazing World Cup (1992), Dipak Patel played 37 very very ordinary Test matches for New Zealand. Batting average 20, bowling average 42.

 Devilliers is good with the gloves. His is just natural at it, what he stuggles with is his footwork and positioning.

Spot on there Muffler I reckon.

De Villiers is a gifted, natural athlete. Played cricket, rugby, golf and tennis when he was younger, could of chosen any of them to persist with and chose cricket.

De Villiers. Batting average as a keeper around 31, twenty odd less than when he doesn't keep. Keep on keeping on AB.

Exactly the reason why I hate saying the gloves are affecting his batting. Kept in something like 5 tests compared to 50 without. Impossible to compare stats yet

Chris Matthews
Batting average of 10, bowling average of 52.

Interestingly his first class average was doubled with the bat and halved with the ball.

Not sure if Matthews was overly affected by nerves or whatever (presumably he was!), but I recall he struggled big time with his line, and bowled a lot of wides.

Was a reasonable Shield bowler though admittedly.

Could be wrong, but memory suggests Matthews actually had a couple of good tests before he lost it?

Of course you can. He's keeping and he's not in good batting form. They are not sure where to bat him now which wouldn't be happening if he wasn't keeping. After the slaughter on the first day he went after Rudolph who can't bat for shit. Nah, no effect at all.

In his defence our team back then was terrible. Bowling to a defensive field doesn't instill you with a lot of confidence.

Hastings is giving this a real crack and WILL join the list of one test wonders. It is an embarrassment to have a guy bowl 120k/hour with the new ball when we are desperately searching for wickets
