I'll leave the character angle to others, but I enjoyed his commentary. I read one of his early books, "All tangled up in white", or something similar, and found it a great read, especially from a player's point of view.
I liked his commentary for the very reason that he didn't follow the herd. That didn't make him right, but it made you think. So many of the Australian commentators are a bit wallpaperish and follow the established line, not daring to criticise those players on the inner sanctum.
