As for the umpires not calling those close ones, I wonder, given how often those ones where there's an inch or so in it aren't being called but being referred right away, whether the umpires are being told not to call them if they aren't sure but then refer them. If they are then it's pretty unfair to have a crack at the umpires for just doing what their bosses tell them.
Do you think people would really whinge and complain if the umpire called a no-ball on a close one and it wasnt? If they didnt have a million cameras at the ground, the tv would show the crease line, people would even question the umpires decision.
Absolutely. Free run, extra ball. If the umpire called it a no ball and there was a wicket, would he then refer it? With a rule that is so clear cut, no discretion or human analysis is really required so why not get a machine to call it? Let the umpires concentrate on something that can't be done by a machine. I think we'd all prefer to see errors with front foot no balls eradicated from the game.
